Whilst it may be considered the least favorite One Piece Filler Arc (Continuity Errors as Zoro later claims to never have seen a dragon and he cuts chains of steel despite being unable to until Alabasta ... though I chalk that up to Commodore Nelson using cheap inferior metal chains) it still holds up better than most fillers in other anime, especially that D@MN BOAT ARC in Naruto Shippuden (Personally my least favorite One Piece Arc was with the Crew getting Amnesia ... though the Seahorse wanting to be a Millenial Dragon was a nice callback). Plus, Eric the Whirlwind was a decent Filler Villain and Apis made a nice Honorary Straw Hat Pirate. Ryu-Jii aka Grandpa Ryu is now reincarnated and enjoying youth ... unless he listens to Grandpa Bokudan's full history lesson story in which he'll probably be back to his old age again. XD
At least for me, I enjoyed the filler arc, since I watched the anime before I knew the manga, so I accepted this without question into the canon.
Fun fact: In the german version they corrected Zorro´s plot amnesia. He said on Punk Hazard: So einen Drachen hab ich noch nie gesehen! - Such a dragon I have never seen before. Meaning, since he had seen Ryu-jii, who was a featery dragon, a full fletched reptilian dragon was unknown to him.

As a person who has never gotten into One Piece unlike my older sibling, and keeps spouting stuff about it to me every time there is a new chapter, despite me not knowing much about what is going on at all (Yes yes, feel free to throw tomatoes at me) the most I can say is that this geezer dragon is adorable. His very long shaggy beard and his more somber expression as he's tied to likely be heckled and jeered at in public is very cute. His expression just tells me "Sigh, suppose some patience is necessary for this predicament. Its just as well." He's so bushy. And he's in such a docile pose as well, with his legs lightly crossed and sitting upright against the stalk instead of slouching. With how bristly you made his tail and beard, I honestly would like to stroke Ryu-jii's beard. A lot. Sure, I probably would be punished if I tried releasing him, but I shouldn't be chastised if I happen to feed him a bit right? I can't help it if I find his dragon form cute. XD He has a very nice design clothing wise too. Reminds me of a samurai, especially with those long pants. Well I know that much, that Oda makes very 'unique' designs that instantly make it recognizable, even if my brother complains that with his diminishing eyesight, that he simplified them a lot much to my brother's chagrin. A very charming job my friend. I shall surely chat with him on the days he is being punished, and try not to be too obvious about how he's rather cute. (and likely fail miserably)
Thanks much for liking this version of gramps Ryu.
One Piece is not everyone´s cup of tea, sure. Even I was not a fan to beginn with. But my pen pal from Germany recommended it to me and so I gave it a try. After some episodes, I became used to the art style and eventually the story captivated me more and more. One Piece sports an epic story, filled with comedy, but also heartbreaking tragedies. There are even anthros in the series. The Minks. I love them.
