This is neat. I got some old HBO guides from eBay and this one from September of 1986 shows when I first saw “ Rock N’ Rule “ . I would have guessed it was August but it was September ( I got an August of ‘86 guide too ), but I knew it was a Saturday. It was before I got my paper route so it was rare for me to get up this early. I was actually able to watch it all alone without any siblings waking up to bother me. I’m guessing this HBO guide was from a different time zone cuz all of the daily Fraggle episodes listed were at 6:30 am and not 7:30, which is when it aired here. So, this showing of “ Rock N’ Rule “ was at 4am and not 3am. Still, very magical. 😎🎵

HBO is where I watched it the first time. I was still in college, and got their guide each month. I think it was 1984 when I saw it though.
I also remember when HBO premiered Simon & Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park back around 1982 - way back when MTV actually still played music videos 24/7.
I believe they only did Eastern and Western time zone guides, so anyone in Central or Mountain zones, would see listings that were off by one or two hours.

That makes sense. We got HBO with our cable in the summer of ‘86. I don’t recall getting the HBO guides though. I got a few from that era off eBay so I could also pinpoint when I first saw Fraggle Rock.
Nickelodeon had an outdated movie review show on at the time hosted by Bill Bixby that reviewed Rock N’ Rule which was how I learned about it. Then they played it on HBO that one time and I didn’t see it again, possibly not until I got the 25th Anniversary DVD set… although we might have gotten it from the library in the 90s… but I think that might have been a different movie.
I do miss MTV. 😎

I watched Fraggle Rock when it was on, but can't remember any times or days. The '70s and '80s were a great time for good TV shows and movies. Even to this day, most of what I watch is pre-2000 stuff.
I discovered Rock n' Rule when HBO showed an ad for upcoming movies, It looked good, so I made sure to watch and record it. I eventually bought a bootleg copy of it at a late '80s Star Trek convention, hoping it would be better than my copy, but it was worse. Then, in 2005, I learned that it was about to be released on DVD, so I pre-ordered the two-disc version. That was better than my VHS copy, but still didn't seem as clear as when I originally saw it on HBO over 20 years before. I have no time machine to go back and actually compare the DVD to the what I remembered.
Since you mentioned a 25th anniversary version, I just went looking. All the reviews seem to suggest it looks and sounds a lot better than the DVD release that I have, and it's also on blu-ray in HD too. Looks like more money is about to vanish from my wallet!

That was always the draw for me when I wanted HBO back then, Fraggle Rock was on and Star Wars. Back then though, I knew nothing about Fraggles and just thought it was some sort of Muppet rock band. But it was a kid’s show so I wanted to see it. 😄
The R&R DVD set is pretty good. The 2nd copy of the movie that comes with it is a slightly different cut with a bit more cussing. I recall Omar calling one of the skater brothers a dick nose. Also, at the end, for some odd reason, they show the dead skater brother wake up. It’s just a brief thing I think when Mok has been sucked into hell or whatever while Omar & Angel are singing.
The best thing about the set is the making-of video. It’s almost better than the movie… cuz, while fun, the movie is … oh what’s the word? Klunky.

Haha.. I was four years old at that time.
However, I have seen Rock N' Rule courtesy of Youtube, and, I've seen it before Omar got his voice changed. He did an awesome scream before the demon that Mok summoned on-stage.
My favorite character was one of Mok's bodyguards, Sid.
Sid liked what Uncle Mikey tried to teach people.

It's a friggin' parody video but it has the original scream that Omar's former VA made.
What a rabbit hole to fall down into, huh? I watched some Youtube video and I found out that the some(?) if not all of the dialogue for Omar was re-recorded by a different VA. I'm not certain if the 'higher heads' at the studio decided on that due to the fire that destroyed much of the original film, or if they just didn't like the voice work that Omar's original VA did for the film.
A similar thing happened to Legend: the main corporate people didn't like Jerry Goldsmith's score for the movie and they wanted to appeal to the younger generation of teens at the time, so they called in Tangerine Dream to produce the score for the movie. From what I read, the revised movie score might have made the movie flop, but that could also be a soured opinion that was also shared by Ridley Scott.
** If any of this is B.S., please let me know.
