Buck Brothers: Canadian Flag Day 2/15/24
Today in the Vexillogical Corner…
The 15th of February is Flag Day for 🇨🇦 Canada. The flag was officially adopted on February 15, 1965 made by George Stanley.
In the early 1960s, Canada had The Great Flag Debate which involves the idea of Canada having a new national flag to replace the Canadian Red Ensign.
Pearson came up with a design which had three conjoined maple leaves together on a white band with two blue bands at the hoist and fly end to represent the two oceans surrounding the country. That was once known as the Pearson Pennant.
Then in 1965, Stanley used red bands on the hoist and fly end with a white band in the middle with an eleven-pointed maple leaf. This flag was adopted that day and replaced the ensign flag. Now, it is seen flying over the Parliament Building.
The flag has a 1:2 ratio with red meaning prosperity and hope and the white for impartiality of the country. The eleven points on the maple leaf symbolizes the eleven provinces of Canada.
The flag displayed above the art was made by @gettysburgflag.
