The crew of the Stellar Typhoon all have their various interests outside of their work, and as occasionally touched upon in SPCM, one of Alasdair's hobbies is model railways. I never really established the full nature of his layout, other than that it was permanently set up in a spare cabin, and took up most of the available space - something like those huge layouts you always see people building in their attics. This was something I'd always wanted to base a piece of artwork around, and I'd actually made a note of it in my ideas to draw file. However, it was only recently that I finally decided to do something about it.
Joining Alasdair on this occasion are Kyoko - of course - and Hope Asante, who serves onboard the Stellar Typhoon as a medical officer, pilot, and ship's chaplain (a person of faith who's into model trains - bit cliche, I know).
Incidentally, I originally intended to show some generic LNER-type stock running on the layout - which I imagine is closer to Alasdair's own preferences. The Thomas characters came about because when I decided to include Asante, I thought it'd be fun to show her doing some detailing work on Toby (who is canonically her favourite character). Then it just kinda snowballed from there. My justification is that those models belong to Kyoko, but she doesn't have a layout of her own, so she's having to exercise running powers over Alasdair's layout.
