When Drift injured his arm during his fall (killing the drift hopper), Slayer put a splint on his arm and told him "Don't take this off until I or another adult tell you to." And then Slayer died before that happened, and Drift was out in the wild, so nobody told him to take it off.

He just needed the time (and rest) to let it all sink in, and the poor guy definitely needed that moment of clarity and confirmation too.
I'm sure it'll be rough for everyone to adapt to the new situation, but hopefully things will get better, especially now that Drift is awake and aware he isn't alone anymore. <3
