Speculative Skull Island Bullshit: Lion dog
The lion dogs are a testimony of the extreme speed evolution can have on Skull Island. Evolved from the dogs the ancestors of the Iwi have brought to the island, lion dogs are massive, heavily-built, have manes and back spikes to protect them in fights against conspecifics and dangerous wildlife alike, and almost cat-like paws that allow them to climb. Despite their fearsome appearance, they still have traits of their domesticated ancestors and can be tamed, especially when trained from a young age. Naturally, lion dogs live in very small packs and tamed individuals usually only respond to a single handler. Once widespread on Skull Island, the lion dogs have been wiped out by the emerging skullcrawlers on the main island, with a few small populations remaining on adjacent islands. The remaining populations suffer from inbreeding depression and it is highly likely the species will go extinct soon.
Changelog:

Anyway I don't think that the ancestor of this creature was a dog. The Skullisland is too far from any continent + dogs only exist since the Ice Age (and 10,000 years not enough to an evolvate of an animal like that). It is more logicao that these creatures are not real carnivores but they are the result of the convergent evolution. Just like the Tasmanian tiger which both had feline and canine features.
