Sounds like a form of torture...

locked in a room and provided plenty of food and water and told, can't come out till you confess. First few days are fine until the mana death mushrooms sprout... we can heal you as soon as you confess...

Mana death mushrooms are actually a really good potion ingredient. Because of that, some unlawful alchemists might do something similar to their enemies while getting a great harvest. Growing them is outlawed in most places

I can understand why it's outlawed... could see a story about some serial killer using Mana death mushrooms and then sell them to alchemists if not use the ingredient them selves.

That's a really cool idea ^^
The mushrooms are used for mana restoring potions that can let a spellcaster regain their mana in seconds rather than hours
