A great memorial to the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment stands in one area of Boston Common.
The 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was founded in 1863 during the American Civil War, and was the second unit in the Union Army to incorporate African-American personnel. The movie "Glory" recounts several moments of the Regiment's history, including the climactic battle of Fort Wagner during which the regiment's commanding officer, Colonel Robert Shaw, was killed-in-action leading the attack. While the fort remained in Confederate hands, news of the battle and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiments' performance and sacrifice encouraged more African-Americans to enlist in the Union Army.
