Just like one of my old shipmates.
Dude was a bit of an idiot, but after a few fuckups, he got his shit straight and started doing very well. He made E3 after getting busted down, and was looking forward to having a career.
Unfortunately, as soon as the ship would leave the pier, he'd get sick. When we made it out of the harbor, he'd get REALLY sick. To the point where he was completely incapacitated. Nothing worked. Motion sickness pills, scopolamine; nothing. Everyone was making fun of him until he passed out and went into convulsions from dehydration.
We were a week from going back out, and he wasn't looking forward to it. I asked him if he'd had a lot of ear infections when he was a kid, and he said yes, lots of them. All the time. I told him to tell Doc, and to go to Trippler Army Hospital for an MRI of his inner ear.
When he came back, he was packing up his stuff to move out to transient personnel unit for processing out. The vestibular system of his inner ear was almost completely destroyed. He was devastated, because he didn't want to leave? But he couldn't stay in. They gave him a medical discharge under honorable circumstances, along with full disability.
