My Favorite Things #2: Caught In A Sticky Trap
Hello, and welcome to a little series I'm starting where I get a commission, or make art, of my absolute most favorite things, give some detail on them, and talk about them. What I like feels very niche to me, and like something I can hold personally to me. I wanted to be able to share as much as I can about my niche little passions towards such things, and so here we are with the second installment. The Tar Monster, from the 2004 film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
I don't own the movie on YouTube, so I can't give the exact timestamp of when Tar Monster first appears, but I can give an exact time of when he first came to be. He first appeared in the cartoon all the way back in October 7th of 1978, season 3, episode 5. The episode was cleverly named "The Tar Monster". But we aren't here to talk about the cartoon, we are here to talk about his live action debut. Despite the black knight standing next to the villain, and being the first monster to be made, The Tar Monster was like the righthand man to the main villain. The Tar Monster was the one to do crowd control, and demonstrate the villains power when the villain was intimidating the citizens of Coolsville to hand over Mystery Inc. Even the villain says at the end "Its not them you need to worry about", referring to the other monsters since The Tar Monster on his on could capture all of the Mystery Gang. In my opinion, The Tar Monster got just the right amount of screentime. Not too much to make it seem like he's the only threat, but not so little to where he felt underutilized. The Tar Monster is big, 12ft according to Kaijumatic - Wikidot. I'm half his size. And to match that size, he's seen as slow and heavy in the film. Fitting, because his foot steps may be slow, but the tar that makes up his body is not, and if you're not careful, he can easily rush his mass via puddles and tendrils straight to your position. As you can see here, I was not careful, and got caught. I work on the assumption that he generates an unlimited supply of tar out of his body, as he's seen multiple times using a large amount of tar out of his body, and his size never seems to shrink. If this is true, he could theoretically expand his mass in a very devastating way, and take full control of whatever he wants. Now... I just got one question... Can he teleport? At least twice in the movie, he's seen rising up out of his on puddle, and I just have to wonder, can that puddle form anywhere he wants as a mode of transportation? Or does he just lay there in the puddle and wait for a cue? My head cannon is that the puddle can appear anywhere, but it doesn't just suddenly pop into existence. It has to rise and bubble up out of the ground, the pool of tar getting bigger as more seeps up to the surface. I can imagine he's capable of doing this anywhere under the surface of ground material that has some form of an opening for liquid to seep through. Manhole covers, cracks in the pavement, stuff like that. This allows him to practically show up wherever, but still with limitations to where he can instantly show up. I love how his eye can basically be non-existent until he opens it. Meaning he can flow through the tightest spaces until he opens it. Speaking of his eye, you'll start seeing a pattern in My Favorite Things as the series goes... Keep an eye out.
Why do I love him? As a kid, Tar Monster was the first thing that introduced me to a sub-niche I have within My Favorite Things, and that sub-niche is tentacles and goo. Tar Monster first introduced me to this niche after seeing the way having a body entirely composed out of a gooey substance could be utilized in a threatening scenario. Shapeshifting, manipulation of multiple appendages, gooey invincibility, rising up out of a puddle. All traits that I love all because of Tar Monster. That scene where the villain was intimidating the town to turn in Mystery Inc, and Tar Monster flooded the street with his tarry tendrils to stop everyone in their tracks, that one scene demonstrated everything I love about gooey monsters. The rising out of a puddle, shapeshifting from a giant hand to his body, manipulating multiple tendrils to trap everyone. Its... perfect...π©πDoes anyone remember Disney Infinity? Well if you do, I LOVED playing as Venom, and I loved fighting all the Symbiote NPCs, because they reminded me exactly of The Tar Monster. When I first started playing SCP-Containment Breach, every time SCP-106 spawned, I never ran until the last second, because I loved watching him rise from his black mysterious puddle, causing the floor to crack. All these fascinations with monsters coated in a black substance they use for coming out of the ground, or for attacking and so on, all originate from The Tar Monster. I've seen many other gooey monsters since, examples such as Bob from Monsters Vs Aliens, or Blobby from Hotel Transylvania, but none of them give the same feeling I feel with The Tar Monster. None of them convey the true powerhouse that is a creature composed entirely of a gooey substance. Now you're probably wondering, what does goo monsters have to do with tentacles? Why are they categorized in the same sub-niche? Simple, tentacles. And The Tar Monster very commonly uses them to his advantage, as tentacle like appendages are one of the easiest and most versatile arms to use. (Tentacles in this context being long, mostly featureless appendages, with a tapering point.) But we'll get more into tentacles another time, for a different My Favorite Things. Scoob-2 may not have been widely loved as a film, but it gave us a monster I have yet to see fiction recreate.
I hope you all enjoyed this. If you've made it this far, thank you deeply for your time on hearing out my incredibly niche liking. I plan for more of these to come, as I have many more favorite things that I feel not many people give enough attention to. If you happen to have this same niche as I do, feel free to let me know! (: I'd be happy to know just how many people out there can appreciate the things I do, in the same way that I do. If you like my work, feel free to drop a fav. It costs ya nothing, and I wish you all the best.

Wow Remy... you've clearly got quite an interest in tentacles and goo and not only that but you've also done your research which shows your fascination with this, I love that a lot and I really have to commend you for that! ππ Don't worry, I'm kind of in the same boat as you about your fascinations, I honestly thought that I was the only one who liked this sort of stuff, but this post indicates that I am not! :D Though I have never seen the movie before but I'm sure I would enjoy it the most if I watched it with you~ and as a matter of fact, I am also one the lucky people who actually got to play as venom in Disney infinity and I do remember it being pretty fun too! I feel like your favorite things so infectious that it's actually making me like them too! XD ^^
Hehe yes I did notice a coincidence about your favorite things, they are both a cyclops! ;D
No problem Remy, and it was quite nice and interesting reading your description, I really enjoyed this a bunch and of course I wish the best for you too~ <3
