On the same page as that Russell cartoon I posted about today, I noticed this on the paper's masthead -- very, very picky about how you pronounce Los Angeles!
[EDIT] Apparently, they started doing this as far back as August of 1908. An ex-collegue of mine from Choate posted a link in FB about the Times, decades later, recapitulating the argument.

Interestingly enough, old time radio shows would use the pronunciation "Loce Ang el eez" (with a hard G) - except for Dragnet, which used the modern "Loce Angh el ess" from the beginning. I remember a color TV commercial from the 60s with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca in costumes as telephones (with leotards!) for Bell System long distance, talking about how cheap a long distance call from NYC to LA was, using the first pronunciation. (A Google search for it only turns up a reference in the Washington Post.)
The TImes's pronunciation is much closer to the proper Spanish than either of the two in common use.
