Back in the day, the audiophile hobby was all the rage. People spent unheard of amounts for cutting edge stereo equipment that made the old 45 player that sisters used to listen to their teen heartthrobs seem quite sick by comparison. There was a specialized stereo shop every five blocks downtown. They it mostly disappeared. Extreme audiophiles still listed to $20,000 sets, but the average guy like myself no longer spends even $2,000 anymore to listen to exquisitely mastered vinyl records. Instead, the world has abandoned that passion for ultra-compressed, electronically generated, commercial hits that briefly appear on Spotify or somewhere for a week, and are listened to with a pair of ear buds that sound like the speakers at a drive-n movie. Fashion and culture changes... The drawing is loosely based on those old TV adds with women dressed up as cigarette packs.

I have a pretty good system with high quality individual component, tonearm, speakers etc. I think the system probably cost over $2,000 originally, but I bought most of the stuff from friends who were up-grading. The pity of it is that I never play it anymore. An attempt to play music at over a quite speaking voice immediately sends my fucking neighbor to the phone to call the cops and complain about the noise. I don't dare even turn on the big screen TV after 9 PM. I have to view everything on my computer. The speakers are only a foot away, so I can listed without straining.
It's a pain in the butt now to assemble a good "mid-range" system, as far as new components are concerned, it's all high-highs and low-lows if you want factory-fresh stuff. Thankfully I managed to scour the second hand market for a few gracefully aged fixer-uppers that sing beautifully for a decent price.
I've got quite a decent turntable and amplifier. Unfortunately the drive belt and cartridge need replacing, and before I could do that I'd need to clear all the junk off the top of the cover.
In any case, I'd only be using the turntable to transfer a few rare vinyl records to digital befroe mothballing it!

I don't use the stereo anymore. The neighbors come to my door with fire brands and pitch forks unless the audio is so low that I can scarcely hear anything. I'd sell the set and the records, but apparently good quality stereo systems are nearly worthless unless in the five figure realm. And while records can be sold, I can't get them to a store to sell them. I can't get over the step with my power chair, for one thing! Also, it's a long drive for the batteries, and I can only carry about ten inches of records in my bag.
