I've more or less got the mesh done now. Working on some material setup and UV mapping next, so I can bring him over to Substance to give him some texture. I'm still really happy with how he's coming out.
This is a closeup of his face, with just a few too many eyes. In the game (as well as my mind) these are "constructed creatures," meant to be warriors. You don't want people sneaking up on your soldiers, so the more eyes the better. He has:
Two pairs of forward-looking eyes, one pair above the other.
One pair of side-looking eyes, just over the mouth.
One pair of large compound eyes, like an insect.
One pair of eyes on the back of his head.
I'm kind of imagining that all but the central pair of forward-looking eyes are independent: He gets stereo distance vision from the main pair, and he can use all of the others to track things around him.
I'm certainly looking forward to getting him textured and rigged up.
