Apropos of nothing, it's interesting how his surname from the cartoon, Depardieu, never caught on, but his surname from the comic, D'Coolette, did. I also often wonder about the different last names, but I suppose it boils down to the show and comic writers not communicating.
Generally negative characteristics. Not only did they take the "cowardly Frenchman" stereotype way too far, they also made him a know-nothing know-it-all, a snob and generally unpleasant, though in his defense, a good chunk of his hostility seems to be the result of Sonic's teasing. We're clearly meant to infer that Sonic is mean to Antoine because he's a jerk and deserves it, but he does it even when Antoine hasn't done anything wrong, making Sonic, not Antoine, look like the one instigating things. Sonic's attitude even if Antoine is a jerk doesn't really help with promoting team unity and cooperation in a group that is so small and its task so intimidatingly huge that it can't afford disharmony in the ranks. Sonic in the cartoon also often puts his dislike of Antoine ahead of the group's own goals, such as when Antoine gets caught and is being "tortured," he advocates abandoning him (!) until Uncle Chuck reminds him that Antoine knows where their secret headquarters is (!!). Sonic, you doofus.
And also, if in fact Antoine is so useless, such a huge liability, why have him around? I get that they're a small group and need as many people as they can get, but then they ought to give Antoine less important tasks that they can't be bothered with, or at least not let him keep coming on missions. It's weird that they think so little of his capabilities but keep having him come along on important missions. Why? To give him another chance? At some point, you have to realize someone isn't cut out for this kind of work, and you can either be honest with them and reassign them other duties, or keep having them do things you know they suck at so you can complain about how much they suck.
As for the comics, I've read a few of the early issues and they more or less match up to the show, Antoine's different last name aside. It was later, when they started moving away from SatAM's continuity and aesthetics and started developing their own that Antoine began improving as a character, to the point where the different last names actually help point out just how different the two are; Antoine Depardieu is so different from Antoine D'Coolette both in personality and attitude and in how he's treated by others that they may as well be completely different characters who just happen to both be blonde French guys named Antoine.
