If you've never had a snake before, I'd recommend not starting out with one of the big ones - if my huge, you mean those that get 10 feet or more. If you're talking more like 4-6 feet, ball pythons are a good starter snake. While this little guy won't be as fat around as pythons and boas, he'll likely get 5-7 feet in a few years.
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/forum.php This is a great forums about any snake you could want - there's tons about ball pythons, but they've got stuff about the giants, venemous, colubrids (like this rat or corn snakes, etc.) as well as lizards and such. If you're anything like me, you'll see the pictures people post of their beautiful snakes and want every one. :D
