There isn’t any reason why the gems that lived on Homeworld should look humanoid tbh

I based these designs on ants and spiders, because the gems social structure reminds me of ants nests, and I thought the idea of their arms being more like a spider’s pedipalps was cool. And their feet are like parrot feet, for gripping onto things. I think it was said in one of the episodes that since their species lives in space they automatically adjust to the gravity of anything they land on, so grippy feet would help sell that idea I think.

Originally I had this as like, a design for the 'true form' of the gems, and that they just shapeshifted into their human forms when comming to Earth in order to fit in more with the humans, but then I got to the episode where, spoilers, it turns out Peridot can't shapeshift, so... that couldn't work lmao. For now this is an AU, where instead of being sentient rocks the gems are silicone based life forms that function more like typical animals. They're even more like ants here since instead of being rocks grown in the ground, the 'diamond' type 'gems' give birth to their colonies via parthenogenesis.
This does mean in this AU that Rose is a rogue queen/'diamond' since she gave birth to Steven, and that Peridot said "fuck you" to her own mother, lmao.
