The young wolf and the old wolf (with story!)
I got this idea from the movie Merlin from 1998. In one part of the film you see an young Melrin which talks with an older version of himself from the future. So I got this idea to drawing a similar encounter between an young and an old Gurume. As you can see young Gurume is quite happy of seeing his future self! I also wrote a story that I will place right under here: I made this as a birthday present for
NightCrestComics 's birthday! It's nothing great, really but I ha d so much fun writing and drawing this and I hope you will enjoy! Please forgive my grammar mistakes!
The young wolf and the old wolf
-BUUUUUUUUUURP!-
The powerful belch was hear from every angle of the, luckily empty, restaurant.
-Gurume!- Shouted Murry, quite angry.
-Sorry Murry! Man! That last portion of deer meat was really superb!- replied Gurume, patting his belly (who was much bigger and rounder than at the start of the evening) with a big smile on his muzzle.
-All right, but can’t you at least try to behave yourself properly?- replied Murry in a grumpy tone but Gurume understood that he was happy of the appreciation of the big blue wolf.
-So- continued Murry –I guess you are up for the next dish, huh?-
-Oh, sorry Murry but not this evening- replied Gurume standing up with a grunt from his chair.
-What?- shrieked Murry, in surprise –You are leaving so soon? You had only thirty portions of deer meat! Are you sick or…. Don’t tell me are you going on a diet!?- he asked with an expression on his muzzle of someone who has seen snowing in the middle of summer.
-Me on a diet?! HA! Are you kidding?- exclaimed Gurume, with a quite indignant tone in his voice –You know perfectly that the only diets I used were fer making my belly bigger!-
-Well then… why leaving so soon?- insisted Murry curios. He know to well Gurume to believe that he was already full. And the fact that the big old glutton was leaving without having stuffed his belly (and emptied Murry’s refrigerator) was really an extraordinary event.
-My kids- replied Gurume – They made me promise that this evening we would have spent some time together.-
-Oh, I see!- exclaimed Murry, with an ironic smile –I should have know I suppose! Your kids are the only thing that can distract you from food hehehe!-
-Haha, very funny! See ya tomorrow Murry!- replied Murry, with a smile that predicted a re-match for the next evening.
-Oh, Gurume wait please!- replied Murry. He grabbed some flyers from the counter and give them to Gurume. –Would you mind to give these to your kids and tell them to distribute them to their friends?-
-Sure Murry! What are they for?- asked Gurume.
-Nothing particular. Just a little publicity for my place, that’s all.-
Gurume was watching one of the flyers with a strange look on his face so Murry asked:
-There’s something wrong Gurume?-
-What? Oh no no no! It’s just that I have this strange feeling, like a déjà vu. It’s like I’ve already seen this things-
-That can’t be. I have ordered them only yesterday.-
-Mhhhh, strange. I could have swear. Oh well, see ya Murry.-
Murry watched the huge wolf walking to the exit and struggling to make himself small enough for passing trough the door. Murry had a smile remembering that he was already forced to widen the door when Gurume became thirty years old. At thirty years gurume was already too big to pass trough the door of Murry’s restaurant and Murry was sure that if the old wolf would have keep gaining weight he would have been soon forced to widen the door again.
He would have never expected that the young cute wolf cub who became his first customer would have grown up into a bear sized wolf with an unparalleled appetite!
Gurume walked along the street heading for his home. His belly was growling quite hard: Gurume couldn’t help it. He was hungry, the dinner he had wasn’t even a snack for him but he was always eager to made a sacrifice for his kids.
It was a beautiful evening though quite cold because it was winter; however Gurume had no trouble with the cold thanks to his fur and of course to the fact that he was fat.
The deep layers of fat shielded him from cold, as well as physical harms, perfectly.
It was quite dark but Gurume could see without excessive problems: his eyes had been a little bit weakened by age but they were still good, even at night.
Suddenly he had the sensation that his sight has inexplicably suddenly grow dim.
He looked around and he saw that there was a deep fog forming unnaturally quickly around him. He couldn’t even seen beyond his nose.
He was quite surprised; just few minutes before he was thinking of how much the air was limpid. The stars were shining brightly and the moon was full and splendid, awakening in him the ancestral desire of howling. There was also something much stranger going on: the fog was turning from white to purple and had quite a strange, aromatic smell and Gurume could feel that under the main smell there were others smells. They were very weak but he could still smell them, thanks to his good wolf’s sense of smell.
His hearing also started to hear some weak sounds which looked like music and people talking.
He scratched his head, trying to understand what was happening.
“Hmmm could it be that I’m so hungry ta have an hallucination?” he thought “Nah I didn’t eat so little. Maybe some of the meat was rotten? No, no, no dear ol’ Murry would newer allow such thing to happen.”
-Don’t worry Gurume! You are all right, trust me- said a sweet female voice.
Gurume gasped: he had heard that voice only one time many many years ago but he still remembered it so well. He made a quick round and he found himself muzzle to muzzle with her.
It was her, he couldn’t be mistaken.
The fox was right in front of him as he remembered her, like an apparition, smiling with her mysterious smile.
-I must say I’m impressed Gurume. I foresaw you becoming big but not so big!- said the fox.
-Madame Vadoma…- replied Gurume, with a very thin voice.
The fox’s smile became more large and happy.
-You still remember me! I’m happy of that Gurume!-
-How could I have forgotten ya?- replied Gurume in a stronger tone from his last answer but still full of surprise.
-It wouldn’t have been so strange. It was fifty year ago.- replied the fox.
-Forty-six actually- replied Gurume.
A fourteen years old Gurume was walking along the main street of Oak City. It was the period of the annual Oak City’s fair and the air was full of music, people’s talk and wonderful smells from the various stands of food.
His father, Aquaqho, wasn’t able to go to the fair with his son because he had another engagement but he left Gurume with enough money to pass the whole day out.
Gurume had returned from the fair event which he preferred: the eating contest.
One of the competitors was an incredibly large lion: he eated an incredible quantity of food in a matter of seconds. From the very first moment he saw the lion taking his position at the table Gurume was sure of something that he was wondering from a some time. He wanted to enter into the eating contests and grow up as a big wolf with the biggest belly ever seen!
But he was not sure of how his father would have taken his idea: Aquaaho was a very strong and athletic wolf. And he was so happy when his son started to play karate that Gurume was sure that he wouldn’t have liked the idea of his son becoming a fat lazy wolf. He was wondering of how he could have proposed the idea to his father when his thoughts were interrupted from a female voice.
-Would you like that Madame Vadoma read you future, young one?-
Gurume rose his eyes. He was in front of what appeared to be a fortune teller tent; on the right of the entrance there was a gipsy fox. She seemed a little bit aged but still very beautiful with a mysterious happy yet sad smile on her face; the kind of smile you find on the face of someone who knows something you don’t.
-Oh no thank you miss. I don’t believe I have enough money.- replied Gurume smiling.
The fox smiled in return:
-Did I asked you anything about money?-
-Well, no but…- Gurume didn’t know how to go on; Aquaqho had taught him many times to be suspicious towards strangers especially at the fairies but he didn’t know how to be polite but suspicious at the same.
The fox, with a serious face this time, added:
-But I suppose your father taught you to be diffident from strangers right?-
Quite surprised Gurume answered affirmatively.
-Your father is very wise. Very wise indeed. Then perhaps you should better go and don’t come in.-
Gurume hesitated; he could not deny that he was curios. Also he know, or at least he believed that he had enough money for all the day so, even if the fox would have asked for a payment, it wouldn’t have been a problem. He struggled for a minute in indecision and finally he decide.
-Ok miss- he said.
The fox smiled and opened the entrance of the tent.
Inside there was only a small round table with a crystal ball in his middle and two chairs in opposite directions.
The fox indicated on of the chairs and Gurume sat.
The fox sat on the other chair and, looking the young wolf cub in the eyes asked:
-First tell me, would you really like to hear the future?-
Gurume was surprised:
-I don’t understand miss- he answered.
-You can call me Madame Vadoma, Gurume- replied the fox
-Okay Mad….wait, how do you know my name?- Asked Gurume in shock.
The fox smiling replied:
-I’m not an impostor Gurume. I can really see the future.-
-So do you know everything?- said Gurume excited
-I know what I have to know. Now, I have to tell you this. The future can sometimes be not so nice to hear. Are you really sure you want to know it?-
-Yes, I am! I have no fear!- replied Gurume with decision.
-Very well then.-
The fox started to wave her hands around the crystal ball, mumbling words that Gurume could not hear. Suddenly she stopped and looking into the ball said:
-I see something. It’s you. Many years from now. My, how much you have grown!-
-Really?- asked Gurume excited
-Oh yes! Both in height and in belly size!-
-Really?!- Gurume was getting more and more excited –How much do I weight? And am I tall? What size of clothes I wear?Am I…..-
-Please, slow down!- said Madame Vadoma laughing -I cannot answer so many question in one time-
She paused briefly and added:
-You are a nice young wolf, Gurume. I would like to make something special for you-
-Really?- replied Gurume.
-Yes, and I think I will!-
She posed an ashtray on the table and she burned something: Gurume smelled something similar to incense.
-Take my hands an close your eyes- said Madame Vadoma
Gurume did what he was told. While he was holding the hand of the fox with his eyes closed, he started to get a strange feeling: like he was floating.
-You can open the eyes now!- said Madame Vadoma.
Gurume opened his eyes and gasped: everything was gone! The tent, the table, the chairs! He was still sitting and so was Madame Vadoma: but they were like floating in what appeared to be a giant mass of smoke.
Gurume thought it was something like being in the inside of a cloud.
-Where are we?- he asked to Madame Vadoma.
-Mmhhh here and there, and maybe also over there. But this doesn’t matter: we have come here because there is someone that would like to meet you.-
-Who?- asked Gurume.
The fox indicated something behind her shoulder.
Gurume watched and saw that from the smoke was slowly emerging a figure. It was difficult to see but he could understand that it was very tall and extremely large.
In normal circumstances (if that could have called a normal circumstance) Gurume would have been probably afraid but for some strange reason he wasn’t at all.
The figure finally became clearly visible and Gurume gasped: in front of him there was the most big wolf he did ever see! It was even bigger than his father Aquaqho and most of all, he had the biggest belly he ever saw! Even the lion that he saw at the eating contest, compared to the round figure in front of him looked like nothing but a bug! He had also really big and muscled arms.
He was about to asking Madame Vadoma who was the stranger when he suddenly noticed three things: the wolf had a blue fur, a red armband on his right arm and his eyes were strangely familiar.
-It’s me…..it’s really me?!- he asked, turning to Madame Vadoma.
The fox nodded, smiling gently.
-I’m….I’m…. so huge! I’m even bigger than my father-
He looked at his bigger self and noticed that he was wearing glasses:
-But….will I grow that old?-
-Now watch yer therms, young one!- said the old Gurume.
Young Gurume gasped: he didn’t expected the apparition to talk!
-I’m… I’m very sorry sir! I didn’t mean to offend you.-
-Hahaha, don’t ya worry! You didn’t!- laughed his older self. Young Gurume noticed the big and strong teethes in the mouth of the giant wolf.
-I suppose you are quite surprised, aren’t ya?- asked old Gurume.
-Oh, yes!- replied young Gurume. And he really was.
-Well, I’m quite surprised too! Things like this do not happen every day!-
-Yes! But are you real?- Everthing seemed too nice to be real.
-Oh yes I am! Ya can bet on it. I’m a bit confused about this thing too but I’m darn real-
With a smile he added:
-But if ya don’t believe me, then come here and give me a hug!-
-I.. I… I can really?-
-If ya want, sure!-
Young Gurume made some hesitant steps: when he saw that the “cloud” seemed to sustain his weight he started to move to his older version, faster and more faster until he reached it. He opened arms and hugged the wolf’s huge belly; even with arms opened he could not grab but a small portion of the wolf’s gut.
It felt so wonderful; soft and warm.
-Oh, it’s so wonderful. I wanna a belly like this- exclaimed young Gurume with joy.
-Ya will have, son!- Said the older Gurume with a big shiny smile –Just be patient and remember: eat as much as ya can and anything ya can. And don’t be afraid for dad; he will understand-
-Really? He won’t be upset with me?- asked young Gurume.
-Of coarse not. Just go to him and tell what you want to become. Ya know, wolf to wolf!-
-Ok, I’ll try then!-
-Oh and something else.- He picked something from his pocket and give it to the young wolf. –Just go to this place. Ya’ll find the best meat in the whole world here. And also the biggest portions! Not to mention the most exciting and tasty eating challenges!-
-Ok I will!- said young Gurume
-Now I must leave- said old Gurume addressing to Madame Vodoma.
-Yes, I know.- replied the fox.
-Already?-asked young Gurume, a bit disappointed. He didn’t want to leave the big wolf so soon.
-Sadly, I must. I’m a grownup now, ya know. I have many things to do, beside eating of coarse!-
-Ok then.- replied young Gurume. He gave to that wonderful belly a last hug and he let him go: the old wolf bid his farewell and leaved, vanishing in the purple fog.
Then fox take Gurume hand’s in hers and asked him to close his eyes once again.
When Gurume finally reopened his eyes he was again in the tent.
He asked to Madame Vodoma about the payment: even if the fox would have asked for everything he has got it would have been a worthy price.
But to his surprise the fox simply said that they will have “settled the matter in another moment”.
Once he was outside from the tent, he looked at what his older self gave him.
It was the flyer of a restaurant: strangely the restaurant wasn’t very far from Gurume’s house but he didn’t never hear of it.
He decide to go and take a look.
He soon find the place: the place was called “Murry’s”. He also understand why he never heard of the place. Right on the left side of the entrance there was an sign which sayd:
“First day of opening! All you can eat free ”
He entered and moved to the counter; he couldn’t see anyone but he heard a grumpy voice, coming form behind the counter.
-I can’t believe it…. the whole day has almost passed and no one came, not a soul…..and it’s even the day of the fair….-
-Uhhm, escuse me?- asked Gurume hesitantly.
A grey wolf emerged from behind the counter.
-Well hello boy- he said with a smile –What happened? Did you get lost?-
-Oh no sir- replied Gurume –I just would like to eat here.-
-Oh, very well then. If you would like to seat there, I will serve the beast met in the whole city-
The two wolves become soon friend: when the young blue wolf leaved Murry was very surprised. He never expected that the little wolf had such a big appetite.
Little did he know that the appetite Gurume had would have been nothing compared to his appetite after not so many years!
After ten years Gurume was walking again in the main street of Oak city, during the fair time. No wolf could have been more happy than himself!
His father not only respected his son’s decision, but also he was very proud of how big and strong Gurume was growing.
His belly was now large and round but he was far from what he was aiming to become. And he was also building a big reputation about his appetite!
The only thing that displeased him was that, despite the fact he always searched for here, he had not been able to find again the gipsy fox.
He was walking, feeling happily his belly bouncing at every step when suddenly he heard a scream from a lateral road.
He checked and saw three punks that were bothering a young girl.
He entered the road and asked the punks to leave the girl alone.
If those idiots would have some brain they would have leaved instantly. But it appeared they didn’t.
After five minutes the three punks were running, crying for they mummy while a rightful proud was walking out of the street with the who was holding to his arm.
-So you work here?- asked Gurume to Wendy.
-Yes, my father owns one of the food stable of the fair. Thanks again for helping me with those guys, Gurume.-
-Don’t mention it. A wolf gotta do what a wolf gotta do. Say, I’m looking for someone here at the fair. Do ya think ya could help me?-
-Sure! I know almost anyone here!-
-Oh very well then. She’s a gipsy fox. A fortune teller actually, and I think her name is Madame Vadoma!-
-Madame Vadoma?- said the girl sursprised –You must be joking right?-
-No why?- replied Gurume
-That can’t be. Se was my great aunt but she died many years ago.-
-What did ya say?!- replied Gurume
-Yes. You know, you may call me crazy but she wasn’t an impostor I swear.-
-Yes, I believe ya.- replied Gurume. There was no reason for why he shouldn’t have believed it.
And so, after many years Gurume was again seeing the fox right there, in front of him.
-I’m sorry to disturb you Gurume but you should come with me.-
-Why?- asked Gurume
-Because there’s an young wolf who need some advice from his older self.-
-You mean that….-
-Yes. Can’t you see it? It’s so simply actually. Many years ago, you saw an older version of yourself that give you some advice but you haven’t met an younger version of yourself to teach right? Now it’s the time you complete the circle.-
Gurume finally understand what the fox meant. He gave the hand to the fox and closed his eyes, like many years ago.
Now everything was clear: the smell he feel where the odor of the incense, and he could also smell the various sweet smells from the various stands of food. And the noises where the music, the people talking,….
He was travelling back in the time to see his younger self.
And there he was: a little young, skinny wolf who looked at him with first surprise, then incredulity and then, finally joy.
When his younger version asked if he was going to grow so old Gurume’s thought was: “Oh well. This kid surely need some lessons: both in manners and eating stuff.”
-Well, I guess it’s over then?- asked Gurume to Madame Vadoma who was still holding his hand.
-Oh no, not yet!- replied the fox –We still must settle the matter of the payment-
-Oh, yes. But I don’t have much money woth me right now- said Gurume.
The fox replied laughing heartily:
-You silly old wolf! I didn’t ask for money!-
-Well then, I don’t understand what….- replied Gurume but he interrupted. The fox suddenly went near to him, hugging Gurume gut and winking at him.
Gurume had a smile: he understood what kind of “payment” the fox was asking.
-I know this evening you are busy. Let’s see us tomorrow evening here all right?- said the fox
