Today in the Vexillological Corner...

The twelfth of September is Defenders' Day all the way in the U.S. state Maryland. At Fort McHenry, this used to be during the time of the War of 1812 and the successful defense of the fort in its entirety.

The flag had fifteen stars and fifteen stripes to depict the states at the time because the Flag Act said that a star and a stripe were added to the flag with Vermont and Kentucky joining the Union. The original "Star-Spangled Banner" flag is currently at the smithsonian with the replica flying at Fort McHenry and the Historic Shrine fortmchenrynps. This is another one of my favorite historical flags to find out there.

If you look at the Fifty-Star American Flag closely in the upper-left canton, you can see a Fifteen-Star Pattern on the flag itself, which is another one of Old Glory's best and hidden secrets in which the flag tells the nation's story since the beginning with the thirteen stars.
