As you might well have gathered, SPCM takes a lot of inspiration from film and TV sci-fi, and one thing many such franchises have in common is the overwhelming prevalence of desert planets - deserts being much easier and cheaper to film than most other forms of terrain. Naturally, they're almost as common in SPCM, and so here we find Jaws and Leslie having crash-landed on such a desert planet, staggering through the sandy wastes looking for signs of civilization. Evidently Jaws has seen enough of those films and shows to recognize the cliche.
I realize now, of course, that in deference to my British roots, I should have had them staggering through a disused quarry instead - they're just as common in British sci-fi, for pretty much the same reasons as deserts.
