He does seem like a fun guy!
Unfortunately, the bugs out there were obnoxious, and they made going for walks a bit more unpleasant than I'd like to admit, but they were actually not that much worse by the water than they were on the trail. While mosquitoes are annoying little flying dirty needles, it seems like the gnats were actually a bigger problem overall.
I didn't want to douse myself in bug repellent because that can cause problems of its own, but I think the only alternative would have been to dress like a beekeeper.
