I think there was a very different approach to death and portrayal of skulls in the 18th century, because you'll find many memento mori-esque things from that time if I'm not mistaken.

It was actually very common as gravestone iconography from the late 1600s up through about 1750ish, when winged cherubs began to come into vogue.

Not, I suppose, one of the major carvers. I wonder where someone would find a prepared stone like this for a DIY session?

That carver has maybe 2 or 3 stones in the East Derry yard. Not sure where one would find a prepared stone, though it was a thing for amateurs to use whatever was available.

Some look like they found (or split) a flat rock in the woods, others are clearly prepared. I suppose there were quarries that specialized in such things; they could provide blanks or even 'seconds' for a reasonable price.
