From personal experience, I can say that atlatls have to be made just right, and require a LOT of practice to use at all.
I probably made mine too short, and with too stiff a shaft- as they did not fly straight, and were hard to aim.
I experimented with every type of ancient weapon I could ever find reference material on; even did some obsidian knapping, as I had sources in the mountains of northern California I could hit for raw obsidian rocks.
