Regional Variant Concept -- Spinarak [Art by Lay]
Here's another Pokémon Regional Variant Concept. I was originally planning to make a Regional Variant Ariados, but when the pic was nearing completion, I realized I put Spinarak's name in the picture instead of Ariados. Oops. Ah well, it does look quite small, so I ~guess~ it could work as a first stage? Some newer official Regional Variants do actually look more like their final stages, so that's a sight of relief for me.
-- This design was inspired by the Garden Spider (we call it the ''Cross Spider'' over in the Netherlands though, because of the signature cross-shaped pattern visible on their backs), and I decided to make it a DARK / BUG type, instead of the predictable BUG / POISON type we've seen ever since the very first generation of Pocket Monsters. DARK / BUG I believe is also a type combination that hasn't been used yet, or at least not for many monsters (there's apparently a monster with this combination in generation 9 ...I think?). I also gave it antenna that are intentionally dissimilar from the deep grey-ish body, since most real-life animals contain something striking and colorful on their body to indicate that they're dangerous or venomous. Snakes for example, but spiders also have this, like the Garden Spider I just described. I made the limbs a deep purple, similarly to indicate the danger of this creature. To finish it off, I gave my Regional Spinarak those imposing, creepy small blood-red eyes with glowing white pupils, which I think is a great recipe for striking fear into its enemies. I might do an evolution of this monster someday, it's just screaming for more ideas to be practiced on it!
