Well, they're just computers, and computers are practically giant Rube Goldberg machines. Knock one thing out of place and the whole system collapses.
Older games do seem to handle errors a lot better though, probably because the programs were in read-only memory and there were no exception handlers. You could corrupt quite a bit and they'd keep on going. Modern games tend to just trap any error and lock up, or overwrite their own program and die horribly.
