Males typically don't have high standing in hyena society, often they are even downright hated by the females, this was definitely true for Kifeda's mother a hyena warlord who just wanted female heirs. so when her last pregnancy with twins resulted in a boy and a girl she wanted to drown him then and there. However her mate managed to talk her out of this, the boy might still have some promise as a fighter or tactician since he did come from good stock afterall...

This turned out to be another disappointment as Kifeda turned out to be rather a weakling ( no thanks to poor nutrition as he only got fed scraps) and his schooling left something to be desired. This caused his mother's resentment to build up over time untill one day she snapped and attempted to kill him, but she couldn't do it when the moment arrived, leaving him only with a small scar on his neck. His mother was seething for weeks after so when a slave caravan passed through she decided to sell Kifeda and spin a lie that he ran off like a coward.

So it was that Kifeda ended up in the same slave camp as Cora who took him under her wing for years, even though he was always taught that lions were the hyena's sworn enemy. Cora ended up being more of a mother to him than his own ever was and he grew to respect the older lioness more and more to the point where he had fallen in love with her but he never told her that. So when they made their final escape he wanted to prove his worth and decide to steal back Cora's hairpin and create an extra diversion. It meant he almost jeopardized the mission in doing so but it worked oout in the end, even though he paid the price when he took a bullet for Cora... After his recovery from surgery he finally dared to admit his feelings and to his surprise she accepted his proposal.
