Chapter 1
Misty waited nervously in a chair outside the offices. She had just finished up her last day of first grade and was now going to get to choose an activity for the summer. Since last summer had been before her first year of true school, she hadn’t got to choose what to do, instead being put in an Elementary school prep camp for the whole summer. Not that that camp was bad, in fact she had had a very good time, but she was looking forward to a new level of independence now that she was 7. All the young furs in Dr. Kodiak’s academy had to be enrolled in a camp over the summer, but as they got older they got more and more control of what that was.
“Next!” came a slightly robotic voice, breaking Misty’s daydreaming. She quickly hopped off the chair and walked into the office, sitting down in front of Mr. Ivy.
“Welcome.” said Mr. Ivy, looking down at Misty over his glasses. “Misty was it?” Misty nodded. “Ah yes, Dr. Kodiak mentioned you. There’s a special program this summer that he thought you might be a perfect fit for.”
Dr. Kodiak was a genius bear who was in charge of the whole academy and all its surrounding programs. While he ran all his programs with the intention of helping orphaned furs like Misty, he was, at his core, a researcher. It was common for his programs to have two intentions: helping the participants and gathering information for his research.
“A special program?” asked Misty, both intrigued and a little nervous. “What is it?”
“It’s a small camp being run as part of a new study.” replied Mr. Ivy with a slight robotic whirr in his voice (Mr. Ivy was a cyborg, so he often sounded somewhat robotic.) “I haven’t been given many details about it, other than that they’re looking for five 7-year olds to participate.” He paused, quickly scanning over his notes. “The specifics are still being worked out, but it says that since it’s such a small group you’ll be able to have more control and input on the activities that you do.”
Misty was getting more interested. It wasn’t that she disliked being around other furs, but her autism could make big groups very overwhelming. Also, getting more choice in activities wasn’t something that most furs her age got. “What’s the study about?” she asked, wanting to make sure there wasn’t some sort of catch.
“I don’t have the details on it, but it says that it’s based around a new method of relaxation.” he replied. “Supposably this new method will help with reducing stress and anxiety while also improving focus. Are you up for it?”
“Yes! I want to do it!” said Misty excitedly. She had always been pretty nervous, and had had some trouble in her first full year of school. If this camp could help with that AND provide her a fun summer, she was fully willing to give it a try.
“Sounds great. I’ll put your name down.” Mr. Ivy quickly typed something into his computer. “Looks like it won’t be starting until Monday, so you’ve got the weekend free. On Monday morning, you’ll head down to the shuttle site where you’ll be picked up and brought off to the camp. I hope you enjoy it!”
---
The weekend seemed to drag by slowly, as Misty was excited to start the camp. What was it going to be like? Who were the other four furs going to be? What exactly was this study going to be about? She woke up very early on Monday morning, and hurried around her small room making sure she had packed everything she wanted to bring. She would be staying in the camp’s building for the whole summer, so she wanted to make sure she brought everything she might want. Avi, the kind bird caretaker, had come by the day before to let her know what she would and wouldn’t need to pack. The camp would be taking care of clothes, food, bedding, and activities (including toys), so she only needed to bring her comfort stuffie Carrot and a few other little knick knacks to make sure she felt comfortable in the new place. As the clock struck 8, she grabbed her backpack and hurried down the stairs and out to the shuttle stop.
There was a van painted in rainbow stripes with the words “Camp Relax Out” written on the side in plain black text. As Misty approached, she saw a tall green bunny by the door holding a clipboard.
“Hello there!” said the bunny cheerfully. “Are you by any chance Misty the bat?” Misty nodded, giggling a little to herself. “Perfection! I’m Tart and I’ll be one of your counsellors. We’re just waiting on one more kid and then we’ll be off to camp. Feel free to hop in the van and get yourself settled.”
Misty climbed up into the van where she saw three furs already waiting there. On the right side, a reddish-orange fox was asleep in a car seat, while a black cat was playing with a doll that looked like a pink sheep. On the left side was a pale pink horse holding a plush unicorn and kicking her feet back and forth. Nervous about talking to any of the new furs, Misty sat herself in a seat at the back of the van where she could see out the back window. She kept her backpack on her lap, as she felt weirdly nervous about being around new people. Just as she was getting settled down, she heard someone else climbing up into the van. Peaking back over the headrest of the seat, she saw a small white duck settling down at a seat near the front.
“Are you all ready to go?” asked Tart, hopping into the front seat and starting the engine on the van. “Yeah!” called on the pink horse. “Then off we go!” replied Tart, as the van pulled out from the shuttle stop and onto the main road.
