I just learned that the creator of Fission Chicken, J.P. Morgan, died the day before New Years. I had known J.P. for years -- ever since we were members of Rowrbrazzle -- and I was a great fan of his brilliantly bitter work. At one point we had even written and adventure for Beatrix and Fish together, a project that foundered on several practical snags.
I don't believe J.P. attended many conventions. If not, it's unlikely many of his readers ever met him or knew what he looked like. I took this photo of John in the 1990s, at an East Coast furry con I no longer remember. I wanted to post it so that fans would be able to see J.P. one last time.

Belatedly, I notice that John is holding a doll he made of Mickey Mouse as a skeleton. Brother, this photo was made for his obituary!

Here's something I'd like folks to remember John by, just a little sliver of his talent:

That fits in with my memory of events. And if I remember correctly, you joined us for lunch that day. I also remember that J.P. was pretty quiet while you, Schirm and I did most of the talking.
As I said elsewhere, he was a good fellow, a talented artist, and he will be missed.

This news stuns me even more than my learning of the passing of comedian Charlie Callas on 1-27-11. Both J.P. and Charlie had made me LOL in their own respective ways. Both will be missed, naturally, but I probably will miss J.P. even more - having met him on two or three separate occasions.
