Frame by Frame - the Ten Best Digital Animated Films
At the beginning of 2011 there have probably been about three dozen digitally animated films by major studios. Any idiot can make a list of his ten favourites, but can he justify them as the "best?"
Yes, this idiot can!

I don't think Flash animation was really what he had in mind when he made the list although for what it was, it is amazing to watch and I really like the film. My list would have included "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" although not 100% digital. One of my favorite films.
I liked the fact that, even though my lineup would differ, I can respect your choices. I probly woulda swapped in Up for its emotional power, Monster House for sheer originality, plus Over The Hedge and Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs for making me laugh hardest. The Tale Of Despereaux might have made it too; the script and moral are excellent. I really wish 9 had been better, since I really wanted for it to be as good as the short it was based on.
Oddly, Ratatouie didn't affect me much; possibly because I was a bit distracted while seeing it. And the moral of Cars didn't sit well with me, for reasons I'm still not sure of. I think the over-romanticization of small towns may have been it.
I also like how Tron managed to at least get itself mentioned. I saw it again recently and, yeah, there has never been anything that looks like it.

Not a bad selection. It's full of Pixar... for the very simple reason that Pixar has produced consistently stellar computer animated movies.
I know I put Wall-E as the best animated movie of all time, and it's a topic I care about very, very deeply and it's had to beat out some serious competition - like Cats Don't Dance and all of Miyazaki's movies. The environmental message is a complete red herring as far as I'm concerned. As a love story and as an exploration of what makes us people it's just breathtakingly powerful. Watching how naturally Wall-E makes every life he touches bloom floors me every time I watch it, and that's only one of the movie's threads.

It was easy to rate Wall-E ahead of Cats Don't Dance or Spirited Away in my list of ten. The list was only for digitally animated films, and none of Miyazaki's are, nor was CDD. If I had to list ten best films from the entire animated genre, I'd go nuts... Maybe two or three digital films would make the cut. But there are too many other animated media to take into consideration -- traditional types like Pinocchio and The Iron Giant, for instance. Unquestionably, two or three of Miyazaki's would go on the list. Then there's stop-motion -- the list of ten would have to include Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. Two plus two, plus two, plus two is already 8! Three plus two plus three plus 2 is the whole 10!!!
Oh, I know you were limiting yourself that way. And I was saying that Wall-E is *so* good that even if you expanded it to all animation, I'd still list it as my #1. And as you just pointed out, some of the competition - bless you, Sir, for mentioning the heavenly Coraline - is STIFF.
