Here is an old hewing axe I bought a couple months ago on Ebay. The axe head it self was most likely made in Austria before WWI but after the 1600s.
It's called a goosewing and there are examples of this style of axe made in America during the the 1700s made by German immigrants who migrated to Pennsylvania. Such a pattern is known as the Pennsylvania goosewing.
I've always wanted one, but the ones from America are too expensive because the sellers think they're sitting on a gold mine when it comes to vintage items.
One could be found for 500 or so USD while another from Hungary, a neighbor to Austria could have one being sold for about 150.
They're quite beautiful axes and their purpose is to turn roughly cut logs into square beams for building houses and barns and anything else requiring a stout square piece of timber.
I made the handle from American ash because I felt it would be fitting.
