This was the picture that I ordered in
AttacRacc's stream recently (before I won the raffle that I posted earlier). Just Mercedes on a case, looking for something, and apparently has got some good hints as to what she's looking for by the looks of that smile...

Mercedes' reconnaissance is being read to me spontaneously spoken by Geraint wyn Davies' 'Detective Nick Knight/Sir Nicholas de Brabant' in Forever Knight, her words in his voice saying 'kluue', heavy on the vowels. I've never heard him say 'potato' or 'vodka', so my she-wolf-cousin Svetlana and her stash of good, strong libations are probably safe.
He might've once or twice said little fluffy snowflake, given that Forever Knight was set in Toronto, of course.

I mean, there certainly have been villains... the werewolf in the first story was a serial killer, the third story had an eliminationist bigot of a monster hunter, and the vampire in the fourth story was creating a cultists following to use in a personal vendetta.
Fortunately Mercedes is very hard to mind control. A powerful mage could force her to do things, but that wouldn't be controlling her mind, only her actions. Like a genie or a summoned demon, she could be given orders by a mage and have to obey them, though nothing would stop her from complaining or from potential creative interpretation of the orders.
It's something alluded to in the latest story, though it hasn't happened. And it's why the spirits and shapeshifters of the world try to keep careful track of the small number of actual mages or there.

*chuckles* Honestly, the main reason she affects the noir style is that it lets her get away with wearing a trenchcoat... and the main reason she wears a trenchcoat is that, as a shapeshifter whose true form shows up in mirrors, it's useful to not have too much of her visible if somebody isn't looking directly at her.
As for cement anklets, she hasn't been too much at risk of that yet... she tends to have a higher risk of someone trying to use silver bullets on her. Though the only time she's actually been shot at in the stories so far involved steel buckshot.
