...I have no idea what to say, lol, I started in one corner, then had a page to fill up, I went from there, lol
I think my arm's weakness showed once or twice, as well as tiny tiny writing...

Lol, it's cast care 101, the real reason they tell you not to put anything inside is incase you tear the stocking and padding, you'd basically be ripping apart the inside of the cast XD
I recommend a plastic fork, it's one sided, you just need to make sure you don't drop it, lol

These things are worth their weight in gold if it gets too itchy: http://www.amazon.com/Cast-Comfort-...../dp/B0034CKTOI - It's like a real-world equivalent of Torgo's Executive Powder in Futurama, "Ahhh... That soothes the fire."
Similarly useful are waterproof cast protectors. Not being able to shower drove me nuts >.<

I meant stuff like the cast protectors, and their ilk. We could probably review casts as well, but they're such individual items that are destroyed after they're used (unless you keep them of course, but they're really icky by then :-X).
There are loads of different tapes on the market in different colours and patterns and some work better than others. I remember getting one cast and the technician got into a right huff because the layers weren't sticking together. That ended up being a very thick cast. Kinda wished he'd just scrapped it and started again because it took an age to cut off weeks later.

xD I totally meant that as a joke, but I'm sure if you were experienced enough to have the tech specs you could make some interesting observations on casts
But yes, I do keep a few, although my mom keeps getting rid of them, lol
There are a few companies out their, it would be nice to see what's available

I used a plastic straw a couple years back. It was one of those durable ones you buy for kids 'cause it's got those funny bends near the top. =P I dunno if I was in danger of damaging the inside, but it worked well enough, and had decent reach.
Was so glad to be out of it though! I like being able to use both hands!

XD Heh, that's a common one
Although maybe not why you'd imagine... accidents like that aren't more because you're not used to the cast, they're more because you ARE used to them, after so long of a few weeks, you can plain forget the cast sometimes
You're sitting reading a book, really into it, you reach for the mug beside you without looking up from the book
*THUD*
Cast meets porcelain, porcelain meets floor, lol

I suspect the soft tape is used because of scaling issues -- a cat's smaller.
Or maybe the tape is used to keep from sticking to fur...
You mention that padding is added between the hard shell and the skin -- maybe a chimera would need less, because they already have some padding.

Well, according to the Vet website I looked up, a cat for instance would just have a splint, some bandaging, then the adhesive tape that makes the cast semi rigid
In chimera it is probably the full scale then, you may have a good point on fur acting as padding, but the binding may flatten it too much, it might go from chimera to chimera, there always needs to be room for instruments to have a gap between arm and skin, and if my time with stitches I'n my head tells me anything, it's that it really, REALLY hurts when the doctor catches your hair I'n the middle of all that wrappings XD
They'd probably want to avoid turning the cast removal into a waxing session I'd say, lol

The stocking/stockinette is a nice breathable layer, it goes on with minimum effort or having to move the injured limb excessively, I'm trying to think if it might function differently with fur, if they might use the electro setting stocking material they put on Firefox so she could wear the boots I'n her 'hunting' outfit
Although I might be getting ahead of my thoughts =o
A very sad fact is, unless you plan on breaking your leg the same day you shave it, excess hair is not a chimera-only problem, for men or women XD
The stocking will flatten down the limb to it's barest shape without being too constricting, no hair or fur's gonna pop up and accidentally poke through the layers and get caught in the plasterwork XD
There are more reasons I'n the design, but if I could go further, I'd probably be qualified enough to be a cast technician myself, lol
As a summary, I'd say I'n all? The cast design for humans would probably survive the transition to chimera without much, if any modification...
You know the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it XD

Yeah, the stocking might need to be electrosetting, because putting a stocking on would work against the lay of the fur, unless there's some obvious technique around that. Like put it on thigh, and then pull it off by two inches to force the fur back in a more natural pattern.
So I'm inclined to agree -- the cast would work on Silverfox.
>You know the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it XD
I should warn you that I have a spanking machine -- and I'm not afraid to use it.

Ooh, that's actually a nice idea, as you see I'n the diagram, they pack plenty of excess material to make the edges, no reason they couldn't hike it up then pull it back down
..and I am so very sorry, I felt compelled to write that XD
Please don't sic the machine on me, I saw what Dyno did with it to Firefox!

Good question actually =O
The boot is really recommended for ops or such where they need access to the leg a lot, there's no good making a cast they needa remove in a week constantly
So the boot is good for that, it also allows you to remove it at times so you can shower it for instance
HOWEVER, it does give some weakness, there's nothing to stop a patient removing the boot, when it's harder to remove the cast
There's also nothing stopping a patient who's removed the boot accidentally causing more harm
The cast's likely the sturdier option, but again, it'd probly vary from injury to injury

I'm curious and I really do not want to offend by asking this question. You've mentioned in journals that you are always in casts for one reason or another. And your character Faith takes after you in that regard. Do have some bone disease that makes your bones brittle or do you just have a lot of bad luck?
I certainly don't mind talking about it, I've actually written about this in previous journals, but yes, I have Osteoporosis
It was a long time coming until when I finally got diagnosed
We had me tested many once or twice, but it wasn't until my late teens they finally gave me the diagnosis =o
Even beforehand, I'd made that a part of my fursona, as well as my subsequent characters that I would add them to each have a cast in their pics and such =B

OMG...I just found this and it brings back such memories of having my wrist broken and set when I was 10 XD I really really love casts, so it ended up not being such a bad experience <3 (For some reason they had me wear a plaster cast for it at first...I had a plaster full-arm cast from my hand up to my shoulder for 4 weeks, then a fiberglass one that only covered my hand and forearm for 2...Maybe just because of how badly I injured it XD)
=O Oh, another cast fan like Tryst?
Actually, 6 weeks is very typical for a healthy kid, but I am surprised they covered your upper arm if it was just your wrist, but plaster is for more rigid casts, maybe they didn't want you moving the limb at all during the initial healing period
Lol, I'm glad you can see how accurate this is... and sorry to hear you had to find out first hand XD

OMG yes! <3 I LOOOOOVE casts! I have ever since I was little and saw the episode of Barney where the girl named Tina comes on the show with one! XD
It was probably because the bones had to be moved back into place...I don't know the names of the two bones in your forearm, but the larger of the two was snapped and almost completely unconnected with the part at my wrist...Like, it had seriously moved over XD and the smaller of the two was also fractured...Dunno if that had anything to do with it.
It's okay...It sucked at first because it hurt, but once I realized I was FINALLY getting a cast I was very happy ^^ Though it took awhile to find that out XD I'd thought it was only dislocated so I didn't care too much.

XD I don't know much about the attraction of casts, although I've often thought it was just the damsel in distress look people enjoyed with me, lol, I won't prod you further on detail there, there are worse things you could be into
Buuuuut yeah, first week in a cast always sucks for the injury, but I'm glad to hear at least you took a little comfort in your treatment, lol (Radius and Ulna by the by =B)
I know I keep my eyes peeled for characters in shows with casts, only because I seem to have this thing where whenever I break something I turn on the TV and EVERY channel has someone stuck like me, like it's being rubbed in, lol, the Daredevil ep of the Simpsons, the Sylvester/Tweety episode in the hospital, etc, etc...

i've used the plaster filled gauze material they used to make casts with to make model scenery. when plaster hardens it has a chemical reaction that gives off heat. it usually just feels warm, but if it was next to your skin and wrapped around it, i can see where it might give you burns.
Not to mention plaster casts are very thick =O You have multiple layers there wrapped around any injured limb, you don't keep that limb protected, you might as well be sticking your limb in an oven
I don't think I can remember any recent cases of trouble, but I DO remember the most recent one I'd read:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6485481.stm
Notably, this case was she stuck her hands IN setting plaster, but I'd think an unprotected cast could have similar (if not quite as severe) reactions =O

XD That part I filed under the censored section, but you are right, sometimes they will x-Ray the limb again after the setting and all to make sure the bones are properly held in place, so they don't accidentally leave you in a cast that's healing your limb the wrong way
It didn't feel worthy enough of an extra space to give additional point to, and I generally tried to focus this pic in a positive light for anyone who's never broken anything before so they can at least be reassured how it'll be seen to
Last thing I'd wanna say to someone is how much they'll be poked and prodded, lol

Ehhh, the whole bad things happening with casts is a common horror trope you see now and again, same advice as I have earlier, don't stress any, just heal up and if your arm feels weird in any way, keep in mind the advice-slash-pamphlet they would have gave you at the hospital =0
There's very few reasons to worry about your injury once the casts on, just stay snug, comfy and safe =B
Lol, and yes, I have osteoporosis, so I'm always curious to meet new members of the prestigious cast club XD

There's no wrong way to do it, although I definitely recommend holding off on full contact football for at least a fortnight, lol
But yes! When the bones are set, they're still broken as you'll see in any X-Ray, but your body is stil growing, by positioning the bones in an aligned position with one another, they effectively 'knit' back together =B It's a fairly lengthy process, but by week two or three, you should see in any x-rays that the gap in the break isn't as big as it was previously
So it's important the limb is kept in the locked position to give the bones the time they need to heal properly, and also prevents you from getting reinjured if like someone bumps into you =o (won't stop it smarting like heck, buuuut better a muttered swear word and an ice pack than a new hospital bill)
Lol, and I stand on my last comment, way I look at it, you either cry or you laugh in situations like this, I'd rather make it positive wherever possible, hence why all my characters end up sharing my same condition, lol

I'm getting close to week 2, and i have metalwork in my arm (doc said it would help my arm set better) hope it's okay...
well, maybe i'll laugh about this later, I suppose I'm laughing a little right now
Same condition...I knew your character was familiar to me and Vosur confirmed that, her name is Jasmine isn't it?
