Despite the severity of the Event, many highways and roads have survived to the present day. One of the most useful connects two settlements within the wastes that were once the Midwest United States, allowing relatively safe travel between the two. Years of work have also allowed the settlements to restore telephone service, freeing them from having to communicate via couriers and messengers who had to travel on foot or by car.
Still, any journey between the two is not a quick one: even travel by car takes up to three days, depending on weather conditions and attacks from the beasts dwelling in the wastes. Currently ferrying medicine to one of the settlements, Stewart focuses on getting to his destination as quickly as possible, hoping he won't be delayed by unforeseen obstacles.
