A new pic of one of the first races I created for the UFIS world, and, of course, they’re bodiless heads ^_^
But, this didn’t come from nothing:
Their planet is an example of the Terran Wellspring War gone wrong.
The two main superpowers on their planet were on the verge of open war, with smaller nations caught in the middle. And the Major Wellsprings were the main weapons.
The governments of these smaller nations opted to preserve their populations around the springs in vaults deep underground, but they knew there wouldn’t be enough magic energy to keep everyone’s full bodies alive, and they couldn’t build nuclear generators powerful enough for standard cryosleep. So, they opted to decapitate them, storing their heads around the Wellsprings in a sort of cryptobiosis or magical stasis, with the plan being to restore them to full form in 1000 years after the effects of the war wore off.
It never did.
10000 years later, a Federation ship stumbles across them after detecting the very faint arcane signature coming from the larger of the two remaining springs, and starts the process of restoring what they can. The planet was as barren as Mars is now. Not a detectable sign of life anywhere on the surface. The two remaining vaults housed just 20k individuals in total, out of a planetary population of 6 billion. The Coralans were now critically endangered.
However, after 10 millennia in stasis, the heads were too saturated with magic to be able to survive WITH bodies. Their “chi” network was just too overloaded and adapted to being bodiless. So they were left with a choice: restore some of their remaining population to full, but with unknown side effects, or leave all of them as telekinetically augmented heads. Something that had been done on Terra countless times, but was still very risky. They went with the later.
They also agreed to be resettled on another planet that offered them asylum, and a resort planet at that, as well as provisional membership into the Federation.
There were about 20 individuals with bodies, 10 in each chamber, but none of them had the know how to do the restoration even if it WAS possible.
The telekinesis given to them was rather limited. They’re limited to lifting only as much weight/mass as their bodies used to be capable of, and can only lift one or two objects at a time, depending on their concentration. Usually that means just themselves. Although, with training, they are able to do more.
Sexually, the survivors were all augmented with a bit of magic common on Terra, in order to allow for reproduction and repopulation. They were given a slit on the bottom of their stumps, and sperm sacs in their mouth that release semen on command. They were all, regardless of their previous genders, and in the face of imminent extinction, made hermaphrodites.
It was all a major change for them. Stellar powers they knew of during their time had fallen, with new ones rising in their place. It took some getting used to. But, they would survive.

gameboysage, who I gave full leeway for designing them, and they did fantastic!
They’re an Earth parallel, so they look like Earth species, just a little different ^_^
These three individuals (and going by their Earth equivalent species designations), Praza the Ursine, Oriat the Primate, and Utrecht the Feline, are probably my main three representatives for this species. Although they do have five other general species: the Canines, Avians, Ungulates, Probos (elephants essentially), and Sauropoda.
Praza is an eager, happy go lucky arcane engineer, specializing in designing structures around the flow of magic.
Oriat is a reporter
And Utretch a college student who had yet to figure it out yet.
