Chapter 7 - Just "Lieutenant" Is Fine
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
Flopsy's longest chapter so far, also "Flopsy Deals With The Consequences Of Her Rash Actions". There's only so much weirdness the locals will tolerate, after all, and Flopsy's been exceptionally weird.
Also, the Flopsy finally gets to fight Malik, the man who killed Master. We've seen him here and there, but unfortunately this initial clash proves inconclusive. He's the main antagonist for Book 1, after all, so surely you didn't expect him to be dealt with so easily.
"Book 1?" you might be asking? Well, part of the reason I've been writing so much Flopsy lately is because while I had most of this storyline planned out, I had an inspiration for the one that follows, so "Book 2" is now in development. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this story enough to want a second book. I still need to work on finishing Princess Book 2, and flesh out what ideas I have for her Book 3. Vayryn isn't really set up in a "book" structure, at least not yet, so I don't really know how long her story will go for. ^_^;;
I'd long planned having a "competent detective-type who is following the clues Flopsy is leaving behind", but I couldn't resist making him a total expy of one of my favorite TV characters, so I upgraded him and had to go back and redo parts of the chapter. One issue, though, is that I don't exactly have the highest regard for the police force, which is exceptionally awkward when dealing with a superhero story. Maybe I should write a journal on that. I did try to make most of the procedure seem accurate/believable, but I'm no expert. But that did cause everything to stretch out surprisingly long.
Well, as always, I'd love to hear what people think. I might try to get a Princess chapter done next, but it all comes down to what my brain will let me focus on.

If you are ever dealing with the police at all, the NUMBER ONE thing to do is ask for an attorney. You never know when you'll have an officer hell-bent on arresting you for anything and everything they can, and you have no way of knowing what motivates the particular officers you are talking to until it's too late. Make sure you phrase your request clearly and firmly, use the exact language from the Miranda Rights if needed. There's been at least once instance where a detainee said "I want a lawyer, dawg", and they willfully "misunderstood" him to deny his request because "There's no 'lawyer dog' available". If a bad cop can weasel out of respecting your rights, they will. Do not take chances. You do not need to be guilty to need a lawyer. This is ESPECIALLY true with the challenges you face, cops can spook very easy and if you start blowing up, things could turn exceedingly bad very quickly...
Zach might be a bit furry. Probably not otherkin, but definitely furry-friendly at minimum. ^_^
And yeah, what was that reaction to the two-way radio? Very interesting, it'd have to be something big to have such a clear presence in her Weird Knowledge... It also included subconsciously picking up on "Good Cop / Bad Cop" (even though Falk genuinely IS a good guy). In the initial version, Falk didn't exist as a character, and they were both just asshole cops doing the routine to try to get her arrested. But then I realized I had an opportunity to introduce the planned "Investigator who's right on the cusp of figuring everything out" character now, so I did. And once I went to figure out what personality I wanted him to have, well... What could be better than the legendary Columbo, played by Peter Falk? ^_~
This was a fun chapter to write, let me get into a bit more "meaty" fight now that Flopsy has an opponent who doesn't crumple in one hit. Most of the fighting is more like set dressing, a background thing that just exists as part of the superhero setting. Not that important. But Malik... Whoo boy, Malik. (Also, I'm just amused how this whole series started partially as a way to procrastinate writing a Princess chapter with a major fight scene in it. "I'm not good at fight scenes, I don't wanna work on that chapter, I dunno how to do it. Maybe I'll get some of these other ideas out of my head by writing them down. I know, a superhero comic! There won't be any major fight scenes THERE!" ...I am not smart, sometimes. ^_^;; )
This was also the longest chapter for a while, at 7535 words. The previous chapters had ranged from 4774-5887 (avg 5526). This stayed the longest until chapter 12's 7560 words, and is currently 9th longest in this series.
