was still figuring out the character... and could not decide if he was more "smart animal" or "human". his intelligence level at this point was above chimp/dolphin, and just a little below average human, with a rational thinking ability equal to a 7 - 10 year old child, with limited language skills. note the more animal like pupils.

at one point he grasped the concept of mortality, and had a severe panic attack because he understood that one day he would die.

i think canonly my psychic lucario might have used his powers over the mind to artificially boost ajays intelligence to make him more useful, fun to be around, and to have someone of his own kind to talk to... jury still out on that one.
