Dice & Lighter Sketchpage 2
After doing the first sketchpage of Dice & Lighter page #2 got into a lot more whimsical territory. The first idea to appear was turn Lighter into a 90's cartoon commercial with rad shades and attitude. With that kind of start the ideas flowed into creating images that would be reflective of record album covers, then silly memes, and more entertainment revolving around how Dice sees himself as a stern visage worthy of respect while Lighter is pretty much a scatterbrained dog personality who has no clue how to be dignified.

Before I start these I try to spend a good amount of time talking with the person who created the characters so that I can learn as much as I can about their personality and mindset. I draw a distinction between what makes a character design visually distinct and how they *act* in a visually interesting way. Most of that boils down to trying to figure out what is their baseline attitude: grouchy? playful? curious? greedy? Once I have a baseline I'll try to draw actions or reactions that fit, and hopefully things will snowball from there. Having a second character can be potentially easier since at that point one character can react to the other and in so doing reinforce the entertainment. I could draw a clown performing, but drawing someone having a goofy reaction to the clown makes the picture that much better. I also try to find follow-up expressions that build on previous pictures so things may ultimately end up looking kind of like a story sequence.
