Ye Gods! #1: The (Former) King and I (2005)
Lora Artisan-Craft, archaeologist extraordinaire and world famous video game star, is great at excavating ancient history but terrible at dodging all the traps set for tomb raiders. Lucky for her she has a lot of extra lives. It's a shame the gods and psychopomps of the various underworlds aren't so happy to see her so often...
Oh boy here we go!
I started work on "Ye Gods!" in...technically 1998 I think. It started with a lizard lady parody of Lara Croft, though it would take me awhile to realize she's the real fulcrum upon which this story spins. And while I was intermittently playing Tomb Raider badly at Grandma's house and screaming in terror, I made myself laugh with the thought of a couple Egyptian gods going on a vacation.
It's so interesting to see these comics that are almost 20 years old. I remember painstakingly inking this entire page black with a Micron .08 pen because everything was an experiment for me and I didn't have access to any kind of digital art programs I could use. I was always trying to emulate the clean, solid colors of animation and digital art with the traditional tools that I had (to the extent that a lot of people in the past thought I was a digital artist). Even now this colored pencil on top of Prismacolor markers look is something I think is pretty cool.
Also fun to see that Lora's design was pretty solid at this point. Admittedly she had existed is a character of mine for about seven years by this point, so I'd had time to work on her. Anubis was a much bigger challenge and you'll see how much his design grew just in the making of this comic.
Thank you to all the people who saw these pages when they were first up and for keeping a torch for this silly idea that's been bouncing around my skull for 25 years. Maybe reposting this will give me the inspiration to figure out where I really want to take this story so I can give it the kind of attention nerdy teenage Razz would have wanted. :)
