For last year, during Hypnovember, I did one story with Phoebe and Steven, two Pokemon characters I really like. I had so much fun writing about those two that I decided to work on another story. The idea came after a trip I did for New Year, and while I admit I'm not a fan of the beach, it gave me motivation and an idea I was happy with.

GHOSTLY MERMAID
“For a great vacation together,” Steven said before kissing Phoebe on the cheek.
It finally happened, after years of knowing and working together, the ghost-type trainer and the steel-type champion of the Hoenn region finally became a couple. Even before that people would often think they were one, seeing how close they were and the way they speak affectionately about each other. The only problem with their relationship was the places where they lived and what they usually do, as those things made it difficult to see each other.
Steven spent most of his time in his hometown, Mossdeep City, overseeing the projects of the space center there. On the other hand, when she wasn’t in Ever Grande City, Phoebe went to Mt.Pyre, the place where she discovered her connections with ghost Pokemon. While they didn’t have as much time together as they wanted, soon their summer break was going to start. It was the perfect opportunity for them to enjoy some quality time together. Once Steven defeated the last trainer before the break, the couple traveled to Undella Town at the suggestion of Phoebe.
While not disliking the beach, it wasn’t Steven's favorite place. On the other hand, his girlfriend loved those kinds of places, and since he wanted to make her happy he accepted the idea. Following them on their trip was Misdrevaus, a ghost-type pokemon that Phoebe caught a while ago, and someone who in a way had something to do with the two of them ending up together. Unlike the rough start, where she wasn’t happy being with Phoebe, both gals quickly became close and even shared their love and admiration for Steven, who they saw as a nice and handsome guy, who also had the same feelings for both of them.
During the days in Undella Town, the three of them tried to enjoy their time, walking around town at night and even fighting with some trainers who recognized them as the couple from Hoenn. They had a great time, but what they enjoyed the most was their time on the beach. Most of their stay was spent as they walked down the beach together, hand in hand. They only needed each other's company.
Steven normally waited on shore, waiting under the umbrella so as not to get sunburn, which was a pain since he was pale. On the other hand, being used to this kind of weather, Phoebe stayed under the sun as much as she could, enjoying walking to the shore and swimming in the sea. Steven sometimes went with her, but mostly for a short time.
Just today was what they considered a perfect day, not many people on the beach and no people that wanted to have a battle with them. After a while with their usual routine, walking on the beach and swimming together for a while, Steven tossed the idea of going to that restaurant close to the hotel, the one Phoebe wanted to go to. The short-haired gal liked the idea and let him go to do the reservations. Misdrevaus also went with him, leaving her alone to enjoy the beach until they came back.
Phoebe swam for what felt like hours, taking in the swarm waters and soft sand of the beach before taking a break to enjoy the scenery. After that, she was ready to leave and follow Steven and Misdrevaus, but something caught her attention.
“What’s that?” Phoebe said out loud, finding herself tempted by the shiny object that was under the sea. For what she could see, the object was a pearl necklace. She always wanted one of those, but never understood why she never got one. After all, the two of them had more than enough to buy it, Steven even was part of an important company. Not wanting to overthink, Phoebe jumped into the water, hoping to get that collar.
Upon getting her hands on the pretty object, Phoebe admired it for a moment before putting it on. She couldn’t wait to show her new acquisition to Steven and Misdrevaus, but before she could swim out, the ghost-type trainer was blinded by the shine of the necklace. Her first thought was that maybe the sun hit her, but in reality that object wasn’t just an ordinary thing. Anyone who would find it and use it would experience a big change.
Phoebe tried to swim out, but an idea was telling her to stay, to remain under the sea and enjoy what would happen, but she wanted to see Steven and Misdrevaus. Feeling that something bad would happen, the short-haired gal tried to take off the necklace, but once again was blinded by its shine. She started to feel dazed, having a hard time thinking straight as she started to struggle.
Suddenly, she felt something around her legs, something that at first felt like a tickle only to change into something more…harsh. Phoebe stopped feeling her legs, having lost control over them. She couldn't move or feel them. Feeling scared, she tried to swim out using just her arms, but each time she moved the blinding shine of the necklace would distract her.
When she looked down, Phoebe saw that her legs were turning into the same shade of blue of her swimsuit. “Wha-what is happening to me?” Phoebe said while panicking, oblivious to the fact that she just spoke while being underwater. She wanted to escape, to stop the changes around her body, but all of her attempts were futile as she was stopped by her fears, the shine of the pearl necklace and that sensation.
It was a strange sensation, one that she never felt before. Phoebe expected to have a painful experience, but the start of it felt good. Better than a massage or laying down on a comfortable bed. She would have been enjoying it more if it wasn’t for being scared of what was going to happen to her. It was such a fear that she didn’t look down, not wanting to know what was going to happen…but the sensation was too good to ignore. She never felt like this, and even one part of her was starting to enjoy it.
She couldn't take it anymore, she needed to look down, to know what was happening. Once she locked her eyes into the lower part of her body, Phoebe could see what was changing around her, as her legs were now fused together, now having a familiar shape, one that the short-haired gal recognized. “This tail! M-my legs…am I turning into…a mermaid?!” She had a hard time believing her situation. While she believed in the myths, the ones with those legendary pokemon and the creatures around regions, thinking about a magical creature like a mermaid was different. Phoebe had now proven that mermaids existed. Sadly, she was the one used as an example to herself.
In a last attempt to break free, Phoebe tried to swim as fast as she could using the smooth and strong tail, but once again she was stopped. This time not only was she blinded by the pearl necklace, but also by a new idea that invaded her, one that was telling her that being a mermaid was good, that it could be more than good, it would be perfect.
Phoebe tried to ignore those thoughts, as she was aware that if her mind was corrupted she would lose. She could hear the same ideas, how could she have a new and good life, how she could be prettier than before and how she could use her charms to attract anyone. Of course, Phoebe didn’t care about those things as she was happy with Steven. But then, something else happened, as those ideas changed into how she could have a good life with him and how she could be even prettier than before.
Phoebe was aware of her own beauty, but was also aware that she wasn’t the type for many people, those who preferred women like Cynthia or Erika, who were more curvy and ladylike respectively. On some rare occasions she felt bad for not being the perfect woman for Steven, even though he always mentioned how happy he was with her and how he would love her no matter what. With this idea in her mind, she started to see her metamorphosis in a whole different way. This could be a good thing, one that would turn her into a pretty woman.
“I’m…I’m…”Phoebe said, still fighting between what she wanted and accepting her fate. The transformation was almost completed and while she tried to decide she continued to be blinded by the blinding shine of the necklace and the nice sensation around her body. She wanted this, she loved what was happening and couldn’t lie to herself anymore. “I’m…I’m a mermaid! I’m a pretty mermaid,” she announced, coming to terms with her destiny and this opportunity. She still had her memories, but now there was this new idea, about how good it was to be a mermaid and how much she was going to enjoy it.
Phoebe felt more lithe, more flexible. She was already an athletic gal with a nice looking body after all, but with this new curvaceous tail she felt more athletic. She giggled upon seeing her tail, happy to get this new body. To celebrate she swam for a moment, dropping one of the flowers of her head in the process. It was a good moment and Phoebe wanted to enjoy this as much as she could.
It looked like everything was solved and that this was going to have a happy ending, but there was one thing left: what would Steven think of her? There were two possibilities, either he would love it or that he might dislike the idea and leave her, something that was her worst fear as she didn’t want to lose the love of her life. Finishing her swim, the short-haired gal got out of the water, to see if her boyfriend was there. While waiting, she hoped he wouldn’t leave her for someone like Cynthia, Erika or even someone who was even prettier.
Moments later, Steven and Misdrevaus came back to meet with Phoebe. The ghost-type pokemon was the one responsible for finding her as she saw someone in the water. While getting closer, he could recognize her thanks to the bracelet she had, the purple and black one that had the same meaning as his blue and white bracelet, a detail that meant they were a couple. Upon getting closer, Steven was surprised to see what was happening as his girlfriend was now a mermaid.
At first Phoebe thought that he would run away and leave her, that this nice time they had together would come to an end. To her surprise, Steven smiled and hugged her, something that was a very unexpected gesture. “Phoebe, you are so pretty,” hearing him say that made the short-haired gal smile. He didn’t want to leave her, on the contrary, he was happy to see her like this. She hugged him back, feeling lucky for having such a nice and caring guy for a boyfriend.
Even after she changed, the love Steven had for her not only remained, but it looked like it grew stronger. She wondered if this could be good, like the start of a new life, one that would include the man she loved by her side. She had lots of ideas, but at that moment she only wanted to be with him.
“Let’s go back to our place. If someone asks, let’s say it’s a special swimsuit, and a very pretty one.” Steven said while carefully carrying her out of the water, like a groom carrying his bride. The two lovers left the beach, not caring if anyone would see the new form of Phoebe or having thoughts about them.
Barely a few days into their vacation and both found something special. Phoebe had a new life and a new body, but what remained was the love she had for Steven, the same kind of love he felt for her.
