Ganelon Silvermane came to mind when I read the descript.
In Lin Carter's GIANT AT WORLD'S END, set in c.700,000,000 a.d., an artificial man awakens in a strange world where science has been forgotten and magic and barbarism reign. His name - Ganelon Silvermane. The series of short novels, meant to be an epic, was never completed. Donald A.Wollheim, who runs DAW books decided it w as too "Ozzy" and cancelled the series. Death to him !
I think ,THINK, Ganelon's ultimate purpose is to explore the ruins of the Grand Phesion Empire (flourished c.500,000,000 a.d.) and discover how to destroy the moon -which is spiralling in towards earth.
