I've never heard "The Golden Age," the original ballet from which "Polka" comes. But I imagine it must be a lot of fun.
Best known for his plaintive, triumphant, and devastating symphonies (and the political turmoil that resulted from them), Shostakovitch is often thought to be all seriousness. Yet in pieces like "Polka" which are obviously tongue-in-cheek parodies, we see his playful sense of humor. I wish I could have met him.
Anyway, this is a transcription of the original orchestral work, for wind quintet. I'm playing clarinet, my colleagues are on the other instruments.
