People are so judgy sometimes
Chowa (being the ancestor nation of my universe's Japan) - heavily values order and social etiquette over anything else. And being an heir to his clan (along with his sister), it is a lot of pressure for them to maintain a dignified image while in public. So while unfortunate, in this case it just can't be helped that he felt like he's failed his clan by "standing out" like so.

And if this is kind of a big deal in culture and tradition i can say it is important as well
