After the 44 Ronins revolt, the Chowan Shogunate was dismantled and their society became a multitude of clans working in harmony with each other.
Yasuno being the only heir to clan Yukiyama was naturally elected as the next clanmaster. His marriage with Izumi from the Hasumi archer clan was no doubt an arranged one, but they've spent a long time to get to know each other before their relationship consummated in Ryuu's birth.

Though tragedy struck while Ryuu was still very young, as war broke out with these unknown Spectral army that plagued the land and threatened to overrun the main Chowan settlements. The Emperor of Japan at the time learned of the situation in Chowa, and offered Yasuno's family to take Ryuu to Kyoto for safeguard, but as they were conducting the teleportation ritual to Terra, the spectres assaulted them and eliminated their escorts. Having no time to call for reinforcement, Yasuno and Izumi fought to the bitter end, sacrificing their lives to deliver Ryuu into the barely functioning portal, who'd end up in the Northern Tundras in Terra instead of the royal palace in Kyoto.
