Had a question about something my snake is doing and since you breed snakes and generally live with many of them I was wondering if you could help. Now I don't have a rat/corn but she is a Hognose. Lately every time I take her out of her home for some interaction and exercise I have noticed her doing a "chewing" motion. Kinda like snakes do after eating when they are readjusting their jaws. She doesn't open her mouth all the way but sort of this rolling chew. Have you ever seen that in any of your own snakes?
O-o humm, do you mean like she adjusts one side then the other?
I do once and a while see my snakes yawn or adjust their jaws but it's a brief thing, and pretty rare. She isn't making any wheezing noises or have any bubbles around her nose/mouth, does she?
I've never had a hoggie (some day, maybe! They are cute!) so I don't know if that's a behavior particular to them... I understand they have quite the defensive display XD

Yeah she sort of does this rolling motion. It could be a yawn, but I thought yawns meant they were opening their mouths more than just a tiny bit...but maybe not. She has completely free breathing. That was the first thing I thought when I saw her do it. She only seems to do it when she is in someone's hands. Maybe since she is still so little she feels insecure. I have just been asking people who own plenty of snakes if they have seen such a thing.
I think every snake owner should have a hognose...they are such characters! And unlike the 2 corns I used to own once she finds a comfy spot she will just chill. My corns would ALWAYS be on the move no matter how long I had them out. Even now she is chilling in a little leather bag that sits on my computer desk. Little head poking out. She seems so comfy.

Awww!
Sorry I don't know much about the mouth thing, the only other thing I can think of is maybe something is irritating her teeth - or maybe it's just her little idiosyncracy!
For the time being I'm in IL and you have to get licensed to have a hoggie. I could do that, but I figure I'll probably not be here for too many more years, maybe later I will experience one. They do seem really interesting and way different from my corns!
... In general, I'm beginning to appreciate the fun of different species, it's really neat to see how their behaviors vary. (right now I just have mostly corns, some kenyan sand boas, and one woma python)

That is to bad that you would need a license....is it because they are a native species? I know some states are really picky about that. Thank god I live in Texas LOL They will let you own just about anything without need of documentation. You would think though they would be more concerned about non-native species rather than native ones.
I am sure you will get to have your hognose experience. The only thing that is really a shame is the fact that they don't really come in any other color besides albino and normal colors. That is okay though, they are beauties without a lot of morphs.

Yes, guarding against non-native species and preserving the environment.
Loss of habitat is probably one of the biggest reasons for things going extinct :/ (that and as you said, non native species invasion)
Otch I hate it when people "free" pets they don't feel like taking care of anymore... particularly if it's an exotic species >:(

You and me both, how irresponsible can you be to your own pet and the environment. I wouldn't mind paying for a license or whatever to own a non-native species if it meant others had to do the same thing. Especially if it meant people were keeping tabs on what pets you chose to own.
