Cold death awaits usThere's no escapeFor he who, ruthless, sends us to deathHas no heart at all in his iron breastVictims are we by Fate's hand marked. -Alexi Novikoff-PriboyI'm sure I've mentioned it before, but stories and games with themes of inevitability and slow irreversible and unavoidable decay and decline are my absolute favourites. Something about it fascinates me endlessly for some reason I can't explain. Perhaps it strikes some chords in me, or has some parallels with my own life. Not saying that I'm living a terrible one, but in my own black days, the idea that I have someone, even a fictional one of my own creation in a setting so specifically designed going through perhaps the same things as I am gives me some measure of comfort.
It is so endlessly fascinating to me, settings like these. Some people may find it pointless to read stories or media in settings where there is no hope or possibility of improvement, but to me it's not the prospect of things somehow improving at some far point in the future that keeps me invested, but rather the things that people do in worlds where the possibility of things getting better has been absolutely discarded. What do they do, how do they think? How do they survive on the inside of their heads?
Perhaps the best way to describe the setting of stories that I write as well as love to read by other authors is not perhaps tragedy or even bittersweet, but perhaps more like if the thousand-yard stare was not a physical facial expression but rather a metaphorical way of life and existence. Nothing perhaps brings me more comfort than that, and perhaps real existence is no longer as difficult when, for once, you know you are not alone in this.
Good thing to get commissioning again, I haven't done any for months due to holiday work rush. I need to get back to writing stories I don't abandon halfway through, too.
A little listening material to go with the image! Can't say the music didn't play a huge part when I was envisioning it!
