Another rough watercolor thing I've made, an idea I've had for months after watching Down Periscope and Crimson Tide and reading The Hunt For Red October and Red Storm Rising, a trio of Stingray class diesel-electric submarines moored by the pier at the Groton Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut. A successor to the Barbel class, the Stingrays were developed as an improvement and were meant to compliment the longer-ranged attack boats of the nuclear-powered Permit and Sturgeon classes. Eight were built, with four based on the Atlantic and the other four on the Pacific, built between 1961 and 1965 and half were sunk during the Great Pacific War. The other half was sold to other nations in the 1980s, one operated by the Colombian Navy (ARC Sábalo) was sunk by the German frigate Bremen on April 6, 2003 within the Pebas Gulf, the last Stingray-class boat in service, the RLS Ninki, was retired from service in the Liberian Navy in 2009. The Stingrays were succeeded by the Angler class, diesel boats which found themselves on the frontlines against the Russians in 1996-1997.
