BigChomp commissioned me to do this fun shark-flavored image, based on the Metroid series. Doing this reignited my love of older school 3d art work. The reference images I used showed such a masterful use of limited polies and textures, to the point of incorporating the limitations into the designs with effortless guile. I love how well the original artists surpassed their limitations so hard that you don't even notice them. You just accept that the statue in the background has segmented detail work, because it looks like a statue that just would. The architecture on the building back there is simultaneously believable and optimized for its purpose as a video game model. A lot of this optimization has fallen to the wayside as computer power grows, but I still feel that it's worthwhile to consider.
