Another year down and time for another review!
Overall!
I'd say this year was another year that was more iterative than revolutionary.
I continued working on refining everything I've learned over the years especially with the eyes, I feel. Also tried to work on new sorts of poses more often!
But I think the biggest change in the past year was some pretty substantial improvements with my traditional sketches. I've made some changes to really help clean up the finished sketches and I'm actually kind-of surprised at just how effective the changes have been o.o
I also tried to put some more focus onto adding more details to environments in general and while that one was a-bit more hit-or-miss, I do feel pretty happy with what I managed to get done! I just sabotaged myself some with pictures that don't have as many details to show ^^;
Another major task I've been trying to work on has been creating new refs for a-lot of my cast who have really been needing new refs or just never got a true ref in the first place.
Between new and old characters I got myself to create 10 new refs, so solid progress made!
As always still plenty to learn and experiment with!
Numbers!
Not gonna lie, this year I went through several motivation crashes as a result of everything from distractions, frustation with world events, dental trouble, family disappointments... Really cut into the total counts of finished pictures and sketches. Managed a strong finish, though, with December!
I did also clean up, color, and glowify some commissions I've gotten from a-couple other artists privately and just for fun which also cut down the total counts ^^;
It's crazy realizing that since I started traditional sketches in 2019 I've already done 480 o.O
Then looking at completed pictures there's 298 completed pictures since 2018... I never would have expected I'd be doing this much back when I started in 2018
New characters!
Hard to match last year's 13 total new characters ^^;
Tried to restrain myslef this year and so had 4 and one who had a slight reimagining as a result of her species seeing some big changes!
Creating new characters and refining old ones is just too much fun <3
I also finally settled on the name "Ynaaverse" to define the main universe that the vast majority of my cast is in.
Also while she's not a new character, Puszeky has seen a drastic revival this year too!
Breaking it down...
- Ynaaverse
-- Benna the Lyancroc: Technically initially made late in 2021, I decided to make her official in 2022. She's essentially the genderbent version of my 'sona, Benock, who came into being after Ynaa decided to be a-bit more creative in her letting Benock and Skögul enjoy some multimanifestation fun and then when it was time for the manifestations to disipate Benna remained behind, to Ynaa's surprise too, and ended up becoming her own person. Exactly the same as Benock up until that moment and now she's figuring out what it's like to be a woman.
-- Rhea the Sandslash: An adoptable I picked up from Foxfencer back in July in part because I just loved the "rad mom" energy she had. She's since become very well established as Trorse's mother and has potential to join the Demideities of my cast with time.
-- Lahr the Hisuian Typhlosion/Arcanine: Technically a reimagining of Lahr the feral Arcanine who was basically retired back in 2019 because I just wasn't happy with his place in the cast and design. The redesign was so complete though, that he's pretty much a new character. He's now the husband of Jut and a strong backstory as a mortal who Jut spent a lifetime with and brought him back up to the Demideity tier with her where he became the God of All Trades who's sort-of a handyman.
-- Laalouche the Protolazzlesol: A curious character, Laalouche is a combination of male Salazzle, little bit of Absol, and little bit of Protogen. The "son" of Ynaa in that she made him after a fair number of the deities of her home universe (currently unnamed deities) grumbled that she hadn't yet created life from scratch, which they considered an important requirement of a deity. So Ynaa made Laalouche such that he is also at the same level of power as the deities that were complaining, decided to adopt him "officially" as her son, and is letting him choose for himself whether he wants to pursue being a deity with a domain of his choice or to just be a mortal with benefits.
- Kriggleverse (Universe made by Foxfencer with a heck of a-lot of interesting lore and characters and species in it)
-- Rastine's the Keebol: The Keebol species saw some lore and physical appearance changes, so Rastine saw some tweaks but she's still her!
So now I'm up to... 39 characters total across the three universes I have characters in! So close to 40 XD
Looking ahead to 2023, though, I've already got concepts for 7 new characters o.O
- A new Lombax gal who's very nearly complete with a backstory, personality, ref, and even place in my cast. Just haven't figured out a name yet
- A new Raichu gal who's not quite as complete yet, but has a rough ref, place in my cast, backstory, and personality figured out. Don't have a name yet for her either
- Quirinalis the Charr is pretty complete at this point and has been since I think 2021? Just need to actually create a ref for her ^^;
- Skögul's mom is a character who's very early in development such that I haven't even decided on whether she's a Ninetales or Mightyena, but I do have plans for her personality
- A new Delphox guy who's an expert alchemist and cook and I'm thinking probably Kthaarae's elder brother or father. Undecided on his build, but several ideas. Also thinking he may even be in a relationship with either Niikalei (Goddess of Alchemy who's maws also tend to be big eaters) or...
- A new Serperior gal. Rough idea that maybe she's Demideity tier and her domain is either life or the lifecycle, but the only thing decided at this point is her species
- A new dedicated heavyset plush (not plushie) character. Almost nothing figured out about her yet, but realized that since I've gotten commissions of Trorse, Niikalei, Ynaa, and even Lyn as such, why not have a character who's just naturally like that.
Concluding!
2022 was a pretty rough year overall. To the point it even affected my arting motivation. But I still managed to get a-lot done and learned a-lot and I'm looking forward to 2023 both in hopes it's a better year than 2022 was and hoping for more fun and experimenting with artings!
As always, questions, comments, thoughts, suggestions, and critiques are welcome!
