The only word I understood was pepernoten! Although thanks to google translate, I finally realise exactly what they are as they translate to gingernut cookies, even if more chewy gingerbread whilst kruidnoten is the crunchy variety I'm familiar with. Either way, I finally understand the lion's fondness for them!

There's been whole discussions about whether kruidnoten could even be called pepernoten, considering the chewy ones are technically pepernoten. In general, everyone means the kruidnoten when they talk about pepernoten, though.

There's a "close relative" to pepernoten named the taai taai pop. Similar composition. I imagine it'd be sorta like a gingerbread man.

There are other tasty Sinterklaas treats as well, though. Gevulde speculaas is very nice ^^
