This may seem extreme but unfortunately was very necessary. The humans of this island would never see reason, would never give up their cruelty. They knew damn well the Typhogeny were sentient and knew damn well they were hurting them. They made them that way, made it so they could be hurt. Now the suffering they caused will be repaid onto them.
