I'm curious, as I don't see it stated anywhere, the sounds beneath the speech bubbles, is that how we would hear these conversations? It seemed like the tablet he took with him was audio recordings, makes me wonder if they would have just gotten noises back had he not removed it.
Oh, right. I also was thinking they were speaking a different language, and that she only knew it right away because of the transformation magic. I'm currently trying to figure out what each sound means, intonation-wise. Like "huff" could be subtle resignation, chatter/rattle/yap all seem like normal speech, but maybe yipip/yap is more often in affirmatives? I don't recall seeing bwarkyop before this page, so could be an accent. (But tbh I mostly ignore these flavor-words when I read.)
Oli, pre-transformation, was able to converse with them without a problem. I always took it as more like a vocal quality, like tone-of-voice. "With a rattle in her voice, Hiker said, 'Yeah, I think it would be good.'" or "'Sure, sure,' she yapped." or "...he said, between panting breaths" or "He barked and yapped excitedly as he greeted Hiker", and so on.
Its kinda hard to demonstrate but drekir do say words in conventional language (or can) But their voices are always undercut and vocalized through barks, yips, rattles, etc. So they are speaking english/spanish/etc. Just in a very different way from how we do.
You don't say "hello" you yipyap "hello" if that makes sense
Though throughout the years of Worldbuilding I have gone back and forth on the matter for sure
